What you would seeLo que verías

A top-down photograph shows a circular bronze medal, golden-brown and slightly worn, centered on a plain light-gray background with a soft shadow at lower right. A beaded border follows the rim, with a small nick on the left edge. Across the top arc, raised capital letters read DVBIA FORTVNA. Below, in crowded low relief, a chaotic battle fills almost the entire field: at center, a helmeted, muscular, nearly nude warrior strides wide with legs apart, one arm extended, while another figure reaches up toward him from a fallen or kneeling position. To the left, two more helmeted soldiers advance or struggle, bodies overlapping. To the right stands a horse in profile, its head raised, beside smaller figures partly compressed against the edge. Helmets, limbs, drapery, and weapons interlock with little empty space, making individual actions hard to separate. A horizontal line separates this scene from a narrow lower segment crowded with tiny arms, shields, and trophies of war. The metal surface is uneven, darker in recesses and brighter on raised muscles, noses, helmets, and lettering, giving the small relief a rough, tactile, aged texture.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First follow the inscription along the upper rim, then drop into the tangle of bodies below it. Notice how the horse on the right stays comparatively still while the humans twist, push, and fall around it. Finally, look at the narrow lower band: the scattered objects there change the scene from a single fight into a broader reflection on war.

ContextContexto

This is the reverse of a bronze medal made in Italy in the 1500s by Antico (c. 1460–1528), according to the Cleveland Museum of Art, which received it as a gift of Cyril Humphris. The museum notes that the inscription DUBIA FORTUNA is generally translated as “doubtful fortune” and speaks to the vagaries of war. That helps explain the unstable, crowded combat, but the specific identities of the figures are not stated in the source. It is not known from these data alone whom the unseen obverse portrayed, or for whom this exact example was made.

Curious detailDato curioso

The inscription uses V where modern spelling would use U — DVBIA FORTVNA — following classical Latin epigraphic convention, common in Renaissance medals that imitated ancient Roman coins.

I love reading the bronze like skin: the golden-brown tone is worn, darker in the recesses and shiny on high points like muscles, helmets and the letters DVBIA FORTVNA. The surface is rough and uneven, with aged patina. The beaded border around the medal is interrupted by a small notch on the left. At the bottom, a horizontal line separates a narrow band filled with tiny weapons and shields, almost like a miniature inventory of war.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see here a fortune that spins like an unstable sky. The upper inscription reads DVBIA FORTVNA, doubtful fortune, and the scene confirms it: crowded figures, bodies falling and others advancing off balance, with no clear center. Nothing feels fixed, like a night of shifting clouds. The horse on the right lifts its head as if searching for north. Everything is packed to the edge, reminding us that in war, as with the stars, chance rules.

There are so many people fighting all together! In the center there is a muscular warrior with a helmet and almost no clothes, legs wide apart, and another on the ground raising his arms. On the left two helmeted soldiers push and overlap. On the right you can see a horse in profile with its head up. There are helmets, arms and cloths everywhere, all squeezed tight. At the bottom there is a little line with lots of tiny shields and weapons.
