What you would seeLo que verías

A very wide, low panoramic etching in black and warm gray ink on cream paper, enclosed by a thin rectangular border. The upper half is an almost empty sky, rendered with fine horizontal hatching and soft cloud masses that are barely darker than the paper. Below, the sea reaches a distant, straight horizon. On the far left, in the foreground, a dark rocky outcrop rises beside what appears to be a heavy draped fabric, cut off by the edge of the image. From the rock stand two extremely tall, thin poles; at their tops are curving, intertwined ornaments — part plant, part fantastic creature — with small wisps of smoke or flame. The most striking feature covers the water: thousands of small round flowers, drawn with tight spirals and dots, float in clusters, pile up in the shallows near the rock, and replace the foam on the breaking waves at center and right. A few isolated blossoms drift in the calmer foreground water. The contrast is fine and delicate rather than dramatic, with dense dark lines on the rock and drapery against the pale sky. The scale feels vast and quiet; there are no human figures, boats, or buildings.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start on the left, with the two tall standards rising from the rock, then let your eye travel along the horizon. On a second look, notice that the foam is not foam: the waves are built from hundreds of small flowers. That shift turns a seascape into an offering.

ContextContexto

Homage is an etching made in 1880 by German artist Max Klinger (1857–1920), according to the Cleveland Museum of Art, which holds the print as a gift of Mr. and Mrs. Richard H. Zinser for the fiftieth anniversary of The Print Club of Cleveland. The Roman numeral VI in the upper right corner suggests that it belonged to a numbered set, although the source data do not identify the series or the person being honored. Klinger was known for print cycles with symbolic and dreamlike imagery. It is not known, from the information provided, who receives this homage or what specific occasion it marks.

The Print Club of Cleveland.

Curious detailDato curioso

What looks at first glance like sea foam is, on close inspection, a dense carpet of small blossoms that also forms the crests of the waves, as if the entire ocean were bringing flowers.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. Who or what might be receiving an homage offered not by people, but by the sea itself?¿Quién o qué podría estar recibiendo un homenaje ofrecido no por personas, sino por el propio mar?
  2. How does the image change when you realize the foam is made of flowers?¿Cómo cambia la imagen cuando descubres que la espuma está hecha de flores?
  3. Why might the artist leave the sky so empty and keep every ceremonial sign confined to one edge?¿Por qué dejar el cielo tan vacío y concentrar todos los signos ceremoniales en un solo borde?

The first thing I look at is the craft. It is an etching in black and warm gray ink on cream paper, very horizontal and enclosed by a thin frame. The sky is built with extremely fine horizontal hatching and soft clouds, barely darker than the paper. Below, the contrast is stronger in the dark rock and the drapery cut by the left edge. I am intrigued by those two very tall poles with curved ornaments and wisps of smoke. And above all, those thousands of little flowers made with spirals and dots covering the sea and replacing the foam.

I am drawn to the horizon, that straight distant line dividing the image between sky and sea. The upper half is an almost empty sky, pale and silent, worked with fine hatching. Below the sea is immense and there are no human figures, ships or buildings. The two poles rising from the rock on the far left look like antennas reaching for the sky, with intertwined ornaments at the top. The little flowers floating in clusters over the water make me think of constellations reflected on the sea.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

There are thousands of tiny flowers on the sea! They look like little snails with spirals and dots floating together, piling up next to the rock and some drifting alone in the calm water. The waves in the center and to the right are made of flowers instead of foam. On the left shore there is a big dark rock with a heavy curtain and two super tall poles with funny ornaments on top making little puffs of smoke. Everything is black, gray and cream, and it feels silent and huge.
