What you would seeLo que verías

The image shows an extremely long, narrow horizontal handscroll displayed from end to end, so the figures appear tiny. It is divided into successive scenes separated by bands and areas of pale paper, like episodes in a single story. Read in the traditional direction, from right to left, groups of people in brightly colored kimonos — red, green, blue, white, and black — appear inside domestic interiors and in front of buildings with dark roofs, fences, courtyards, and gardens. In the foreground, small clusters dominate: some figures walk, others sit, talk, or carry out tasks; their gestures are brief and are conveyed mainly through the tilt of the body and their placement within the group. In the background, or on the same plane without strong depth, pale walls, green panels, rooftops, and schematic vegetation follow one another. There is no continuous sky: the beige paper, worked in ink, color, and touches of gold, gives the whole journey its unity. The light is even, with no strong shadows, and the textures look flat and delicate, as pigment on paper does. Scale changes the experience: from a distance it is a rhythmic decorative band; up close, each scene asks for a pause. Repeated buildings, garments, and groupings help the viewer follow the tale even without the text.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start at the right end and move slowly left, scene by scene, as the scroll would have been unrolled. Notice how architecture and clusters of figures mark the passage from one episode to the next. The small repeated gestures become clearer once you stop trying to take in the whole band at once.

ContextContexto

According to the source, this is one of the illustrations for The Saltmaker’s Story, an anonymous Japanese work from the early 1600s, in the Edo period (1615–1868), made with ink, color, and gold on paper. The Cleveland Museum of Art explains that this rags-to-riches tale follows a man connected with Kashima Shrine who eventually becomes grandfather of the emperor through the intervention of the Kashima deity, and presents daughters as gifts from the gods. The story traditionally used three scrolls; a previous owner removed the text and remounted the illustrations as a pair. This scroll covers the second half. The source also notes that girls once read and copied it at New Year’s celebrations and that it was included in dowries, though its specific owners are not known.

Curious detailDato curioso

A surprising visual fact is that the text is missing: a previous owner removed it and remounted the illustrations as a pair, even though the story was traditionally presented in three scrolls.

I focus on how this very long and narrow scroll is made to be viewed little by little. The light beige paper connects all the scenes and shows touches of ink, color and gold that still glow softly. The light is even, with no strong shadows, and the textures feel flat and delicate. From afar it looks like a rhythmic band, up close each red, green or blue kimono and each dark roof asks for pause and care.

What fascinates me is that there is no continuous sky, the background is the same paper that joins everything like a clear night without stars. I imagine moving from right to left as if following a constellation of scenes separated by empty spaces. The groups of figures, fences, courtyards and green panels repeat like patterns to keep your way. It is a map for following a story without needing to read words.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a super long movie on paper! You have to look from one side to the other and in each little piece something different happens. I see tiny people in bright colorful kimonos, some walking and others sitting and chatting in their houses with dark roofs. I like to count how many there are and find the little green gardens. From far away everything looks tiny, but if you get closer you discover lots of hidden details.
