etching
What you would seeLo que verías
Horizontal etching on aged off-white paper, densely filled with a turbulent mythological scene rendered in energetic cross-hatched lines. In the left foreground, a muscular nude man seen from behind stands on a chariot drawn by two rearing horses bursting from waves; he holds a trident in his right hand and raises a crown toward a bearded, crowned figure hovering amid clouds. At center, two eagles with outstretched wings perch on the horses backs. On the right, another bearded nude elder with a trident stands on a large scallop shell supported by sea-horses in the water, surrounded by small tritons and cherubs, his arm extended offering a second crown. In the upper right, on a cloud, a cluster of six plump putti surrounds a heraldic shield topped by a broad-brimmed hat; one holds a pair of scales, another a mirror, and others hold a ewer and wreaths. The background shows a low sea horizon with tiny distant sails under billowing shaded clouds. Light falls on flesh and cloud volumes, while fine interwoven strokes model hair, feathers and foam and convey agitated motion across the composition. Small marginal details include foamy surf, rocky shore and a tiny shield-shaped mark at the lower right.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the triangle formed by the two Neptune figures offering crowns and the Jupiter figure enthroned in clouds at upper left. Move down to the central clash of eagles and horses, then finish with the cloud of putti and the heraldic shield at upper right, where the scales and hat shift the reading from myth to political allegory.

Source data identifies this print as The Quos Ego by Simone Cantarini, Italian, 1612–1648, dated 1632–48, technique etching, culture Italy, held in the Prints department of the Cleveland Museum of Art, Dudley P. Allen Fund. No further description is provided by the source. The subject refers to the Quos Ego episode from Virgil’s Aeneid, where Neptune calms the storm, a motif widely used in Baroque art for allegories of just rule and authority. The shield supported by putti likely indicates a noble or ecclesiastical dedication, but without source information its precise identity cannot be stated.

Curious detailDato curioso
Cantarini, called Il Pesarese, was a leading Bolognese Baroque etcher close to Guido Reni, known for a sketch-like freedom of line and rapid cross-hatching that gives his prints a drawing-like quality evident in the cloud shading here.

I focus on the yellowish paper and the nervous etching line, with fine crosshatching that shapes the bodies, the fluffy clouds and sea foam. I notice how light gathers on the muscles of the nude man seen from behind on his chariot and on the old man on the shell, while dark ink builds deep shadows. I am drawn to that baroque vibration, the turbulent movement of rearing horses, eagles and tritons that still feels damp on the sheet.

I look at the low seascape with distant sails and the sky ruled by shaded clouds and floating figures. At the upper right, six chubby putti hold a heraldic shield topped by a wide-brimmed hat, with a scale and a mirror in their hands. To me it is an atlas of power: Jupiter hovering among clouds, Neptune calming the sea with his trident, crowns offered in midair, as if sky and ocean shared one mythological government.

So many things happening at once! Two muscly men with tridents, one standing on a cart pulled by horses bursting from the waves and another on a giant shell carried by seahorses. There are two eagles with open wings over the horses, tritons and chubby babies in the water and on a cloud. I like the horses that look like they are jumping and the six little angels carrying a shield with a big hat, as if playing at being kings of the sea.
