On either side emerge dragon- or bat-like monsters with clawed wings, scales, open jaws, and curled ears. Along the bottom their bodies lengthen into serpents and twisted cords that knot and intertwine, ending in small heads and pointed tongues. To the left, one creature grips a hanging chain. At the top center, two horned, bearded masks are linked together, with furrowed faces and hollow eyes; above them sits the flat rim of an oval vessel or lid, seen from the side. The drawing is energetic and irregular, with deep blacks in the bodies and fine lines on the shield. At lower left appears the inscription “S. Della Bella fecit cum Priuil Regis,” and at lower right, the number 8. The whole feels like an ornament about to come alive.

According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is *New Model for a Cartouche*, an etching made in 1647 by the Italian artist Stefano Della Bella (1610–1664). What fascinates me is the contrast between emptiness and excess. The central shield is almost clean, just brushed with soft hatching to give it volume, as if waiting for ink. In contrast, the frame is pure tension: deep black ink, nervous and dense strokes. I see the cream paper, slightly porous, with the plate mark around it, and below the Latin inscription and the number 8. It is a practical model, but also a display of mastery in baroque etching.

This frame is a little scary and really funny! The shield in the middle is empty, like someone forgot to draw inside. Around it there are lots of monsters with wings, open mouths and silly ears, and at the bottom they turn into snakes making little knots. At the top there are two bearded faces with horns that look angry and are chained together. One of the monsters holds a little hanging chain. It looks like they are all playing at hugging the shield and do not want to let go.
