What you would seeLo que verías

Photographed frontally and centered against a smooth background that shifts from dark gray at the top to pale gray below, the carved head of a buffalo is seen from slightly above. Two thick, dark horns rise from the top of the head and curve upward to tapered points, forming a broad arch. Below them, small pointed ears project sideways, each with a hollowed inner surface. The elongated face is divided lengthwise by a narrow raised ridge running from the forehead to the nose. On either side, large almond-shaped eyes sit within pale, whitish outlines; their dark centers look forward and give the animal a direct, watchful expression. The muzzle is wide and heavy, with two rounded, flaring nostrils, the right one showing more brownish wear. Beneath it, the mouth hangs open, revealing carved teeth and shadowed cavities. The wood is predominantly charcoal gray and matte brown, with a worn, slightly dusty surface, fine cracks, chipped edges, and traces of lighter pigment around the eyes and nose. Soft studio light models the horns and cheeks, casts gentle shadows under the muzzle, and emphasizes the contrast between smooth planes and rough, aged areas.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the horns and follow their curve down to the small ears, then let your gaze descend along the central ridge to the muzzle. Notice next the white-rimmed eyes: they focus the face despite its animal form. Finally, look at the open mouth and worn edges, which shift the piece from portrait to object that was handled and used.

Curious detailDato curioso

A surprising visual detail is the near symmetry of the face: the central ridge divides it into two mirrored halves, yet wear, small cracks, and losses along the mouth and muzzle quietly break that perfect balance.

  1. How does the mask change when you imagine it worn and moving, rather than still and frontal in a museum photograph?¿Cómo cambia la máscara cuando la imaginas puesta y en movimiento, y no quieta y de frente en una foto de museo?
  2. What qualities of a buffalo—strength, calm, danger, endurance—does this carving emphasize most, and through which forms?¿Qué cualidades del búfalo —fuerza, calma, peligro, resistencia— subraya más esta talla y mediante qué formas?

I focus on the material: wood in charcoal gray and matte brown, with a worn, slightly dusty surface full of fine cracks and chipped edges. I see traces of light pigment around the eyes and nose, and browner wear on the right nostril. Studio light sculpts the curved horns and cheeks and leaves shadows under the muzzle. It is an early 20th-century carving, in Bamileke style, made around 1910, and now cared for as part of the African Art collection at the Cleveland Museum of Art.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I am drawn to its symmetry and watchfulness. Seen slightly from above and straight on, the head seems to stare as if scanning the night horizon. The raised ridge dividing the face marks a central axis, with two almond-shaped eyes with dark centers looking straight ahead and two thick horns opening in a wide upward arch. Small pointed ears complete a balance between strength and alertness. It is a headdress in the form of a buffalo, photographed against a background fading from dark gray to light.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a giant buffalo staring right at you! It has two big dark curved horns ending in sharp tips, little pointy ears on the sides and large eyes with a light border that make it look wide awake. Its muzzle is broad with two little nostril holes and its mouth is slightly open so you can see teeth. The wood looks old, in dark gray and brown, with little cracks. It is in the center of the photo and it is a bit scary but also makes you want to wave hello.

Looking at the mask from the front, how many dark curved horns do you see rising at the top and ending in sharp tips?

    HintPista

Look at the very top of the head for the wide arch opening upward.

  2. #2

What light color is the outline framing the buffalo's almond-shaped eyes?

    HintPista

Check the border around the dark center of the eye that contrasts with the charcoal gray wood.

  3. #3

On the broad muzzle, how many rounded open nostrils can you spot?

    HintPista

Look just above the slightly open mouth, in the center of the muzzle.
