What you would seeLo que verías

The work presents two sides of a single cloth painting placed side by side as a diptych. On the left, against a muted slate-blue background and a speckled red floor, a dark blue-skinned male figure dances at the center; he wears a pale fan-shaped crown, golden necklaces, a translucent white lower garment, and thick armlets, his large white eyes turned to the right as his hands form a gesture. He is surrounded by three women: two at the sides waving white yak-hair fly-whisks and one at the center, fair-skinned in a red sari, holding his hand. All wear golden jewelry, saffron and green saris, and braided hair with ornaments. Above them runs a valance with striped curtains in green, yellow and red with fringed edges, and a worn red top border with a handwritten inscription in black. On the right, three frontal faces with huge round eyes stare outward beneath a cusped golden arch. The left face is dark grey-blue, the central one pinkish-red, and the right one pale; each has a braided golden nimbus and a barely suggested body with patches of red and green. Above them pink lotus buds and yellow blossoms hang against dark green foliage. The yellow and red borders are heavily abraded, with craquelure, stains and pigment loss revealing the pale support.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start on the left and follow the sweep of the fly-whisks toward the dancing couple at the center. Then move to the right and pause on the six enormous forward-facing eyes; notice the shift from narrative movement to frontal icon. Finally look at the abraded areas and hanging lotuses that reveal the cloth's age and handling.

ContextContexto

An 18th-century work attributed to Southern India, Andhra Pradesh, possibly Tirupati, by an unknown artist. Executed in color on cloth and classified as a painting in the Indian and Southeast Asian Art department, it is held by the Cleveland Museum of Art. Museum data identify the recto as Krishna with Radha and two attendants and the verso as Jagannath, Subhadra and Balarama in an arch. The patron and exact date are not recorded, and the source description provides no further details, though medium and style are consistent with portable devotional paintings from southern India in the 1700s.

Curious detailDato curioso

The double-sided format marks it as a pilgrim's portable painting: the Krishna side tells a courtly, festive narrative, while the reverse with the Jagannath triad serves as a direct darshan icon, typical of devotional souvenirs carried from pilgrimage centers such as Tirupati and Puri.

The conservatorLa restauradora

If you look closely you will see what time has done to this cloth that is two paintings in one. On the left the greyish blue background and the speckled red floor are crackled, and above the border of green, yellow and red curtains has a worn red edge with handwritten black letters. On the right the yellow and red border is eroded and the pale support shows through. I am interested in how the paint is lost and reveals the cloth, and how the golds of jewelry, halos and arch still hold the image together.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

What fascinates me most are the eyes. On the left side the dark blue skinned figure with a fan shaped crown has large white eyes looking to the right, alert. On the right side the three frontal faces under the golden lobed arch have huge round eyes that stare without blinking, like moons. They remind me of watching the night sky: they are not realistic portraits, they are presences watching you and inviting you to keep looking for a long time.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It is like a book with two drawings! On one side there is a blue boy dancing with a pretty crown and three girls in saffron, green and red saris fanning him with fluffy white fans. It looks like a party. On the other side there are three funny little faces with super big eyes staring without moving under a golden arch with pink and yellow lotus flowers on top. I like to imagine one side is music and dancing and the other side is saying hi really loudly!
