What you would seeLo que verías
A black-and-white etching, densely worked with energetic, crosshatched lines, in vertical format. At lower left, on rocky ground dotted with tufts of grass and leaves, lie two elongated bodies draped in heavy, folded cloth; one just behind the other, faces barely suggested, arms extended, brightly lit by a focused glow that seems to come from a torch. At right, a tight cluster of five or six figures crowds under a rocky overhang and gazes toward the bodies; one holds the torch whose beam creates stark light and shadow, catching cheeks and foreheads in sharp highlights. The setting is a wooded grotto or ruined site: rugged boulders, thick foliage rendered as tangled skeins of lines, gnarled trunks and, in the background to the left, crumbling wall fragments amid brush. Strong chiaroscuro organizes the sheet: the lower center glows almost white, while the upper foliage and edges sink into velvety blacks and speckled grays. Small details emerge on close looking — individual leaves in the foreground, cracks in stone, the soft sheen on drapery. A handwritten signature appears along the lower margin. The scale feels intimate and hushed, as if a secret discovery in the dark.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Follow the torchlight first, from the onlookers’ faces to the reclining bodies to grasp the dramatic core. Then scan the tangled canopy above and the ruined walls behind to feel how deep shadow makes the sudden illumination more powerful.
ContextContexto
The print is attributed to Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione, a Genoese painter and etcher of the Baroque period, dated to about 1650 and held as an etching in the Prints collection of the Cleveland Museum of Art. The traditional title refers to the legendary discovery of the bodies of the apostles Peter and Paul, a devotional narrative widespread in seventeenth-century Catholic Italy without a precise historical record. Castiglione was celebrated for his mastery of etching and for dramatic lighting effects often linked to Rembrandt’s influence. No specific history of this impression’s edition is given in the source data, but its technique and religious subject align with his known work at that time.

Curious detailDato curioso
Castiglione often signed as «Castiglione Genovese» and is credited as an early innovator of the monotype, alongside his celebrated, sketch-like etchings.

Come closer and you will see pure etching at work. The line is nervous, almost scribbled, and with it Castiglione builds everything: the heavy drapery over the two reclining bodies, the rough rocks and the foliage made of tangled cross-hatching. I love the chiaroscuro, how he leaves the lower center almost white, like reserved paper, and sinks the edges into velvety blacks. That focused torchlight does not just reveal, it also hides. It is Baroque and it is ink on paper, nothing else.

To me this print is a study of light in darkness. Inside the grotto everything is deep night, mottled grays and profound blacks, and suddenly a single torch lights up the rocky ground and the two bodies wrapped in folds. That intense glow cuts out the five or six figures huddled under the rocky vault, painting their faces with hard shadows. It is like watching stars through trees: a small brightness makes the hidden visible. Here the discovery happens because someone dared to bring light into the gloom.

It looks like they are playing hide and seek in a secret cave. Down below there are two sleeping people, covered with a blanket full of folds, lying one behind the other on stones and grass. On the right there is a little group of five or six people huddled together who found them and one holds a torch that shines a lot and makes everything look white in the center. Up top it is all dark forest with leaves made of lots of scribbles. It scares me a little but also makes me curious, like a hidden treasure.
