What you would seeLo que verías

An oval, vertically oriented black-and-white etching printed on aged creamy paper with slightly irregular, deckle-like edges. At center, the Virgin Mary sits draped in voluminous garments with soft, deeply folded fabric; her hair is gathered under a light veil and she gazes tenderly downward. On her lap stands the Christ Child, nude, plump and curly-haired, reaching out with both arms toward the left. Facing him, seen mostly from the back, is the young Saint John, barely clothed in a shaggy animal skin tied at the waist, his small hands clasped in prayer. Behind the group an open window reveals a pastoral landscape with leafy trees, gentle hills, distant water and lightly clouded sky; leaning against the window frame is a wooden cross with a small banner. Above, a heavy curtain with fringe and tassels hangs gathered and pulled aside, rendered with dense cross-hatching that creates rich shadows. Light enters from the window, modeling forms through fine parallel and intersecting lines. At lower left the plate is signed CAROLUS MARATTUS and at lower right inscribed INV. ET. SC. 1647 inside the oval border.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the tender triangle formed by the three figures and the Child’s outstretched gesture linking Mary to John. Notice the contrast between the densely hatched interior and the airy, open landscape beyond the window. Then look up at the heavy fringed curtain that frames the group like a stage backdrop.

ContextContexto

According to source data, this is an etching titled Virgin and Child with the Infant Saint John, made in 1647 by Italian artist Carlo Maratti (1625–1713), who worked in Rome during the Baroque period. The print is housed in the Prints department of the Cleveland Museum of Art. It depicts a common Catholic subject: the Virgin Mary with the infant Jesus together with the young John the Baptist, seen as the forerunner of Christ. The intimate interior scene combined with a distant landscape seen through a window reflects Roman Baroque classicism. The signature and date etched into the plate support the attribution and dating.

Curious detailDato curioso

Maratti was only about 22 years old when he etched this plate in 1647, already claiming both design and execution with the Latin inscription INV. ET. SC., meaning he invented and engraved it himself.

This 1647 etching makes me focus on the aged cream paper and the plate work. I notice the very fine cross-hatching that models the Virgin's drapery and the heavy curtain with fringe and tassels. The inscription CAROLUS MARATTUS INV. ET. SC. below confirms that Maratti etched his own design. I pause at the window with the landscape and the wooden cross with a cloth, where light builds soft volumes using only black ink, without any color.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

As a sky watcher, I am drawn to how light enters through that oval window. The image is in black and white, but the printmaker suggests volume as if studying lunar shadows. The side light sculpts the chubby Child Jesus and Saint John in profile with his fringed skin garment, while the interior stays in half shadow beneath the gathered curtain. Outside, a pastoral landscape of leafy trees, soft hills and light clouds opens up to create depth, almost like looking far away through a telescope.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

I see a lady sitting with very wrinkly soft clothes who is the Virgin. On her lap there is a baby with no clothes and curly hair stretching his arms. In front of them there is another kid seen from behind, almost with no clothes, wearing a little furry skin with fringe and with his hands together like praying. Up top there is a big curtain with little tassels. Through the window you can see little trees and a hill, and there is a wooden cross leaning. Everything is in black and white.
