What you would seeLo que verías

Vertical black-and-white woodcut enclosed by a thin, uneven black border with an off-white paper margin showing light aging. In the foreground a stone sarcophagus with carved moldings holds two reclining figures. At center-right, the nearly nude body of Christ, muscular with short beard and drooping head to the right, wears a faint thin halo and a light loincloth around waist and thighs; wounds on hands and feet are delicately incised. Three bearded men in draped robes cluster around him on the right, one extending the spiny crown of thorns outward, another touching Christ’s head. On the left side of the tomb, the Virgin lies fainted, eyes closed, body limp, supported by three women in veils and ornate headdresses whose hands press her chest and shoulders. Behind them rises a craggy cavern rendered with dense cross-hatching, jagged rock ledges, and a bare twisted branch at upper left; light falls sharply on flesh and drapery, creating stark contrasts of bright whites and deep blacks, with detailed textures of curly hair, thick beards, and heavy folded garments.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the luminous body of Christ on the sarcophagus and follow the hands that lift the crown of thorns above him. Compare his limp posture with that of the fainted Virgin on the left, noticing their mirroring. Finally look at the rough, heavily hatched rocks against the delicate lines of faces and drapery.

ContextContexto

This print is titled The Entombment and is credited to Italian artist Andrea Schiavone, active around 1500 to 1563, dated to about the 1550s. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, it depicts the episode after the Crucifixion when Christ’s followers bring his body to the tomb. The foreground centers on the savior’s wounded corpse as focus of devotion, attended by two bearded disciples identified as Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus, one removing the crown of thorns, while three women care for the collapsed Virgin at left whose pose mirrors her son’s. A cavernous rocky backdrop frames the group, and the thin halo signals the imminent resurrection.

Curious detailDato curioso

The woodcut shows the crown of thorns already removed from Christ’s head while a newly revealed thin halo encircles it, visually marking the passage from suffering to resurrection.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. How does noticing the mirrored poses of Christ and the Virgin affect the emotional reading of the scene?¿Cómo cambia tu lectura al notar que la Virgen y Cristo comparten la misma postura de abandono?
  2. What role does the dark, rocky cavern play in focusing attention on the mourners?¿Qué efecto crea el fondo rocoso y oscuro sobre la intimidad del grupo en primer plano?
  3. Why might the artist emphasize the wounds and the crown of thorns in a quiet mourning composition?¿Por qué el artista hace tan visibles las heridas y la corona de espinas en una escena de duelo silencioso?

Three guides, three ways of lookingTres guías, tres miradas

The conservatorLa restauradora

As a restorer I focus on the aged ivory paper and the irregular black frame that encloses the woodcut. I notice the contrast between luminous whites and deep blacks achieved with dense crosshatching. I am fascinated by how the artist rendered the veins of the rocky cave, the heavy folds of the veils and the light cloth covering Christ. The thin halo, the bushy beards and the curly hair show remarkable control of black and white to suggest volume, light and texture in a scene of mourning.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

As an amateur astronomer I am drawn to the light in this cave that feels like an eclipse. The thin halo around Christ’s head is like a solar corona, a ring of light announcing something to come. In this vertical black and white woodcut, the illuminated bodies cut through the dense darkness of the rocky background, like stars against the night. I see the stone sarcophagus as an observation platform where grief and hope coexist, and the dry tree above reminds me that even in the deepest shadow light finds a way to filter through.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

I see a man sleeping on a big stone box and many sad people around him. Some ladies with pretty veils are hugging another lady who looks fainted, as if she is very tired from crying. On the other side, some bearded men take care of him and one removes a little crown with spikes. Everything is in black and white and looks like a cave with striped rocks and a small dry tree on top. It makes me a little sad but I also feel they love him very much and stay together with him.
