ink and tempera on a vellum roll of four membranes

What you would seeLo que verías

An extraordinarily long, narrow parchment is shown vertically against a plain, pale background, slightly wavy, with edges darkened and irregular from age. It is a continuous surface of aged vellum, cream, beige and grayish-brown in tone, with visible creases, stains and a matte, fibrous texture. Dense columns of small handwritten script in dark brown and black ink cover most of it, with rubrics and details in red. A vertical genealogical line runs down the center, linking circles, medallions and small diagrams like nodes on a map. Near the top are two larger medallions, one deep blue and one reddish, each containing a figure; below them appear a small rectangular miniature, interlaced circles, tables with grids, and a prominent quatrefoil medallion outlined in dark blue toward the lower middle. Further down, the lines branch, narrow and multiply alongside blocks of text. On the left edge, around the middle, two small parchment tabs protrude, worn and shadowed. The lighting is even and diffuse, with no harsh shadows except for a soft one along the roll, emphasizing its fragility and real scale: a fragile teaching tool, not a ceremonial book.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start at the top and slowly follow the central line downward, as a medieval student would have read it. Notice how circles, medallions and tables interrupt the text and turn a family tree into a map. Look closely at the small parchment tabs on the left: they remind us this was an object handled, hung and consulted, not just read.

ContextContexto

This is an English copy, attributed to Canterbury and dated to around 1220, of the "Compendium Historiae in Genealogia Christi" by Peter of Poitiers (c. 1130-1205), a teacher of theology and history in Paris. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, the roll consisted of four membranes stitched together, about nine feet long, later divided for study. It summarizes biblical history through the descent of Christ from Adam, organized into six ages of the world inaugurated by Adam, Noah, Abraham, David and Sedecias, and then by the birth of Christ. Peter intended to help students who could not master the Bible's length or afford books. The attribution to Canterbury is based on comparison with manuscripts and stained glass of the period; the author of this copy is unknown.

Curious detailDato curioso

The original roll measured about nine feet long (roughly 2.7 meters): it was designed to be hung on a classroom wall as a visual teaching aid, like a medieval infographic.

The first thing I notice is the support: four membranes of vellum stitched into a roll almost nine feet long, now separated for study. I see the aged cream and beige tone, the darkened edges, the stains and that matte, fibrous texture that shows handling over time. The brown and black ink is very even, with red touches for rubrics and blues in the upper roundels and in the quatrefoil. I pause at the two small tabs on the side, worn and shadowed, traces of how this fragile teaching tool was rolled and handled.

I see it as a map of time. The vertical genealogical line is like a time axis descending from Adam and linking circles, roundels and tables as if they were constellations joined by orbits. Peter of Poitiers organized history into six ages of the world, from Adam, Noah, Abraham, David and Zedekiah to Christ, and this roll from around 1220 makes it visible. I love the two upper roundels, one blue and one reddish, and the interlaced diagrams: a medieval way of ordering human cosmos into a clear, continuous scheme.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a super long road made of old cookie-colored paper. In the middle there is a line going down and it connects to lots of little circles like bubbles, and some are blue or reddish with tiny pictures inside. There are tons of very small letters and little grids like a game, and lower down a decoration shaped like a four-petaled flower in deep blue. It has two little tabs sticking out on one side, like worn little ears. I like to imagine it is a path to tell the story of a huge family from a very long time ago.

If you follow the central line upward, how many large roundels in different colors crown the top of the roll?

    HintPista

Look at the very top of the parchment: there is an intense blue circle and a reddish one, side by side.

  2. #2

On the left edge, about halfway down, how many small parchment tabs stick out from the roll?

    HintPista

Check the left side of the long roll and look for two small worn tabs that break the straight edge.

  3. #3

What fragile material, in cream and beige tones, is the long support made of, formed by four sewn membranes?

    HintPista

It is a very fine prepared skin, different from paper, that gives the roll its matte and fibrous texture.
