What you would seeLo que verías

The image presents a museum mount with five studies of the same violent scene arranged in two rows. Against a pale green mat, the upper row holds two lighter drawings on yellowed paper and the lower row three high-contrast prints. Each depicts two or three fallen soldiers in a trench after an explosion, seen in foreshortening from feet toward head. In the foreground, a soldier lies on his back with his helmet beside him, uniform carefully detailed, mouth open and eyes closed; his body fills the lower section. Behind him, another soldier has legs raised and an arm outstretched. The handling is expressive: dense black ink blots, grey washes and opaque white highlights suggesting smoke and upturned earth. Lighting is dramatic, with very dark shadows below contrasting pale backgrounds. Textures include aged paper, loose brushstrokes and nervous linework. The lower left print is inscribed by hand «L'explosion» with a signature. The sheet as a whole invites comparison between the light pencil sketch and its darker, more synthetic printed variations, where foliage and soil seem to burst around the bodies.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the face of the soldier in the foreground at lower left and follow his body toward the figure behind. Compare the clean line drawing at upper right with the solid black version below and notice how darkness makes the scene more oppressive. Look for the white touches that stand for smoke or blast light and how they shift from sketch to print.

ContextContexto

This is L’Explosion by Auguste Louis Lepère (French, 1849–1918), dated 1914 and held by the Cleveland Museum of Art as a black crayon drawing, though the mounted sheet combines two preparatory studies and three print proofs of the same subject. The date corresponds to the outbreak of World War I, and the subject — soldiers struck down by a blast — likely refers to front-line violence. Lepère was a well-known engraver and illustrator. No further description is given in the source data beyond technique and the Delia E. Holden Fund credit. The serial format suggests preparatory work for a war illustration or print.

Curious detailDato curioso

Auguste Lepère was celebrated for reviving original wood engraving in France in the late 19th century, cutting the block himself rather than through an intermediary, a method evident in the stark black-and-white contrast of the three lower prints.

I focus on the paper and how the image breathes. On top there are two drawings on yellowish paper, lighter and looser; below, three high-contrast prints where black ink becomes dense and covering. I notice the gray washes, the opaque white touches for smoke and the nervous lines that shape the uniforms. The pale green mat frames the set and reveals the process: from pencil sketch to the synthesis of the print, with deep shadows contrasting with light backgrounds and textures of upturned earth.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see this series as a sequence of exposures of the same flash. Two studies on top, more luminous, and three proofs below almost like negatives, where light bursts and leaves dark silhouettes. The foreshortened bodies, seen from the feet, remain suspended as if floating after the shock wave. The contrast between deep blacks and intense whites reminds me of an astronomical photograph: the smoke is nebula, the earth is suspended dust and the bright background is the exact instant of the explosion frozen.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a comic with five little panels of the same sad story. In all of them there are soldiers lying in a ditch after a very loud boom. The one in front is on his back, mouth open and helmet to one side, as if asleep. You see smoke and dirt everywhere made with black and gray stains. Some drawings are light and others very dark, as if someone had painted night over day. At the bottom left it even says handwritten «L'explosion».

It is not white or beige, it is the soft tone surrounding the whole sheet that contrasts with the black ink.
