What you would seeLo que verías
The sheet is stacked in two horizontal registers, study on top and finished work below. The upper register is a faint graphite sketch on aged, creamy beige paper: three seated male figures on chairs rendered with quick, overlapping, searching lines, surrounded by ghostly pentimenti and undefined background marks, with a small handwritten number at lower right. The tone is pale, airy and unfinished, with even, soft light. The lower register is the resolved composition in bold black ink on white, with dense cross-hatching, solid blacks and crisp contours. In the immediate foreground, a man lies face down on an uneven cobblestone street, beside an overturned chair and a brimmed hat cast aside; his form is a heavy dark pool. Behind him, three hostages remain seated: on the left an older man slumped with clasped hands, in the middle a man bent forward burying his face in his hands, and on the right an upright older man with a cane staring outward. The background shows a ruined street with cracked stone façades, empty windows, rubble, and two billowing explosion clouds rising above rooftops, with shrapnel bursts in the sky. The perspective draws the eye along the cobbles toward the trapped group, framed by verticals of damaged houses.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start by reading top against bottom to see how hesitation becomes clarity and what was added, especially the fallen figure. Linger on the overturned chair in the foreground as a visual bridge between the living and the dead. Finally examine the distinct hand and head gestures of the three seated men, each carrying a different nuance of fear and resignation.
ContextContexto
Work by French artist Auguste Louis Lepère (1849–1918), dated 1914 by the Cleveland Museum of Art, where it is held in the Drawings department as a pencil work with funds credited to the Delia E. Holden Fund. Titled Trois otages assis, it reflects the civilian hostage subject that became prominent in France at the outset of World War I. The sheet documents artistic process, pairing a loose preparatory sketch with a highly finished, print-ready ink drawing likely intended for public circulation as a witness image. The identities of the figures are not recorded; they appear as anonymous types representing vulnerable civilians. The stark shift from tentative line to forceful ink embodies the transformation of an idea into wartime testimony.

Curious detailDato curioso
Lepère was celebrated mainly as a wood engraver, and this double register sheet is a rare window into his studio practice, preserving both search and statement on a single support.

This is the before and after of one idea, and I love reading the process. On top, on beige paper yellowed by time, the pencil barely touches: three silhouettes, searching lines that correct themselves, as if the hand were hesitating. Below the black ink no longer hesitates: the dense hatching, the solid dark pools and the white of the paper build the ruin. I focus on the shift of materials, from something airy to something heavy, like testimony going from a whisper to a shout.

I see two different skies over the same street. On top, in the sketch, the sky is empty, just pale paper, an atmosphere without events. Below, the final sky is filled with clouds that are not clouds: two columns of smoke from explosions swelling above the rooftops and flecks of shrapnel. The hostages, three seated men with bowed heads, are boxed in by the verticals of the facades and the diagonals of the cobblestones, under a firmament that now feels heavy.

On top it looks like someone was practicing with a very light pencil and could not decide, you can see lots of little lines. Below it is the real story and it is a bit scary. There is a man lying on the ground next to a fallen chair and his hat, and three men sitting looking very sad, one with his head in his hands. Everything is in black and white, with broken houses behind and two big plumes of smoke going up as if something exploded. I do not like it, but I cannot stop looking at it.
