What you would seeLo que verías

A horizontal triptych of three nearly identical panels on cream paper, each thinly bordered in black and mounted side by side with narrow gaps. Each panel shows two infantrymen in the immediate foreground crouching and advancing to the right, rifles with fixed bayonets gripped tightly; they wear peaked furazhka caps, heavy greatcoats and tall boots, with packs on their backs. Their bodies form a tense diagonal, hands clenched around the weapons, faces in profile, alert. Behind them, smaller and lower in the composition, additional soldiers repeat the same forward movement among tangled barbed wire and churned earth. The left and right panels are rendered in solid, high-contrast black ink, with reserved white and heightened white touches for highlights on hands and fabric; the handling is graphic, with flat blacks and scratched texture for the ground. The central panel is the intermediate sketch: diluted gray wash, visible purple contour lines, looser and unfinished, with exposed paper and soft pooling of wash. At lower left a small signature with initial A and a handwritten note are faintly visible. The light is harsh, without soft shadows, and the scale emphasizes imminent advance under tension.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the two foreground soldiers and how their diagonal creates forward momentum. Compare the looser central sketch with purple ink to the outer panels where solid black sharpens contrast and defines the wire. Linger on the tangled ground in the foreground and the small background silhouettes that reveal the scale of the advancing group.

ContextContexto

Work titled «Infanterie russe» by French artist Auguste Louis Lepère (1849–1918), dated 1914 and held in the Drawings department of the Cleveland Museum of Art. The recorded medium is brush and black ink heightened with white on paper. The date corresponds to the outbreak of the First World War, a period when Lepère, known as a printmaker and illustrator, produced topical wartime imagery. Visible inscriptions and signature match the source record; no further description or precise place of creation is provided. It is probably a study for press illustration, with the central panel as preparatory drawing and the outer panels as the inked version ready for reproduction.

Curious detailDato curioso

The central panel still shows purple construction lines and translucent washes, revealing the illustrator's working process between sketch and final inked version for printing.

Three guides, three ways of lookingTres guías, tres miradas

The conservatorLa restauradora

I focus on how this triptych is made. It is brush and black ink heightened with white on cream paper, with three vignettes aligned horizontally. The two outer ones are solid, high-contrast ink, with reserved white for highlights on hands and fabric. The center is different: diluted gray wash, with a purple ink outline still visible, looser and unfinished. At the lower left a signature with an initial A can be sensed. That contrast between study and inked version tells me it was work ready to be reproduced in the press.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see these three vignettes as three exposures of the same sky. On the left and right the image is already developed, in absolute black with pure white, like a night without light pollution. In the center remains the test shot, gray, violet, still in process, where the cream paper shows as the background of the universe. The soldiers advance diagonally to the right, cut out against the void, and behind them the barbed wire is like a tangled constellation. The repetition makes me think of time stopped and looked at again.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like they copied the same drawing three times but one was left half done. In each little box there are two crouching soldiers in front, with their little cap, long coat and rifle with a little point at the front, and behind more tiny ones come between little wires with spikes. They all go to the same side, like playing at advancing without making noise. The one in the middle looks gray and purplish and you can see the paper, as if they did not finish painting it. I like to count them and see which one shines more with the white.

It is not black like the outer ones, it is lighter and violet, noticeable in the loose lines.
