What you would seeLo que verías
The image presents two adjacent panels on cream paper, showing the same wartime scene at two stages of finish. In the foreground at bottom, a soldier wearing a kepi carries a comrade on his back; the carried man hangs limp, his bald head bowed forward, one arm draped over the bearer’s shoulder. Dense, expressive black brushwork models the crumpled uniforms and the deep shadow of the earth mound beneath their boots. Behind them, hastily drawn barbed wire and wooden posts mark a trench edge. In the distance, thick, swirling smoke fills the upper third, rendered with bold curving strokes and solid ink washes, while faint plumes suggest a burning horizon. The left panel is a lighter, open sketch with abundant empty space and a secondary figure on horseback barely outlined in the middle ground. The right panel is the more finished version, with a heavily inked, clouded sky, white heightening for highlights, and crisp details in the wire and foreground. Handwritten blue ink at the bottom labels the battle, and the overall handling emphasizes weight, fatigue and urgency through economical, calligraphic marks.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the intertwined weight of the two soldiers and how thick ink fuses them into one dark mass. Then compare the airy, unfinished left sketch with the right panel, where the smoke-filled sky and sharp barbed wire close in. Notice the small white highlights that make the smoke glow and heighten tension.
ContextContexto
Work by Auguste Louis Lepère (French, 1849–1918), dated 1914 and held by the Cleveland Museum of Art. The medium is recorded as brush and black ink heightened with white. The handwritten caption refers to the Battle of Rozelieures in Lorraine, an early engagement of World War I in August 1914. The sheet juxtaposes a preparatory study with a more resolved composition, a common practice for press illustrators of the period. The source provides no further details about commission or publication, though the format suggests an image intended for printed circulation about the war. Lepère was widely known as a printmaker and illustrator.

I focus on how the two vignettes are built on the cream paper. On the left the sketch lets the paper breathe, with more diluted black ink and open strokes; on the right the final version loads the ink, blackens the sky and reserves touches of white to bring out highlights on the uniform and the wire. I am interested in that technical contrast: the same gesture of the soldier in a kepi carrying his comrade becomes heavier and more dramatic through the density of the ink wash. The paper holds both decisions like a visible laboratory.

I look at the upper third and see an atmosphere I also observe in the sky: thick, wavy smoke, made with curved gestures and solid patches that block light like an overcast night. In the right vignette that blackened sky is total, while in the sketch it remains open, empty. It reminds me how the same phenomenon changes with exposure. Here the final version darkens the background so the foreground weighs more, like when contrast makes a silhouette stand out against a dark cloud.

They are two drawings that are the same but different! At the bottom there is a soldier carrying another one on his back, like a piggyback ride but sad because the other one is tired with his head hanging down. They wear little hats called kepi. Behind them there is spiky wire and lots of smoke shaped like little black worms. The drawing on the right looks darker and stronger, with the sky all black, and the one on the left looks lighter and unfinished, with a little horse barely sketched.
