What you would seeLo que verías

A black-and-white lithograph on cream paper, enclosed by a thin rectangular border. In the center, a sick man sits slumped on what appears to be a stone or low seat outdoors. His head is wrapped in a light bandage or cloth, his profile turned to the left, his eyes lowered and his mouth slightly open. He wears a long cape over dark clothing, loose trousers, and large rounded shoes. His hands rest loosely in his lap and his feet, very close to the viewer, seem too heavy to lift. Behind him and to the right stands a woman in a hood and a long, fringed shawl. She bends toward him, her face shadowed, one hand close to his shoulder, as if supporting him or helping him walk. To the left, a thick, gnarled tree trunk twists into a curved branch that frames the man. The ground is bare earth scattered with small stones and pebbles. In the background, a dense thicket of thin, leafless branches rises against a pale, cloudy sky. The grainy texture of the lithographic crayon creates deep shadows on the clothing and bark, and softer grays in the sky and soil. Above and below the image are printed inscriptions, including 'LE MALADE' in capitals.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First look at the contrast between the seated man, slumped and still, and the standing woman, who leans over him and seems to keep him upright. Then follow the curve of the tree on the left: it twists almost like a third body bent by the same hardship. Finally, notice the ground, the stones, and the bare branches, which leave the pair with no shelter beyond their clothing.

ContextContexto

According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this lithograph by Honoré Daumier (1808-1879), with Aubert, is titled The Invalid (Le malade) and dates from 1835. It was published in Revue des Peintres as plate 67, as printed at the top and bottom of the sheet. Daumier was a French artist widely known in the nineteenth century for lithographs that observed and satirized the social and political life of his time. Here, however, the tone is not openly comic: the scene focuses on illness, poverty, and mutual support. The exact identity of the two figures is not known, nor is it known whether they portray specific people; they are probably types meant to represent a recognizable human situation.

Curious detailDato curioso

Surprising visual observation: the long fringes of the woman's shawl, on the right, fall in thin strands that echo the bare branches and roots around them, so her figure almost merges with the winter landscape.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. What does the woman's posture tell us about care when there are almost no material resources?¿Qué dice la postura de la mujer sobre el cuidado cuando casi no hay recursos materiales?
  2. Why might the artist place two vulnerable figures in a bare landscape rather than indoors?¿Por qué el artista habrá colocado a dos figuras vulnerables en un paisaje desnudo y no en un interior?
  3. Does the scene inspire pity, admiration for their mutual support, or both? What visual details shape your answer?¿La escena produce lástima, admiración por el apoyo mutuo o ambas cosas? ¿Qué detalles visuales influyen en tu respuesta?

The conservatorLa restauradora

As a restorer I pause on the cream colored paper and the thin border framing the image, slightly darkened with time. The grainy texture of the lithographic crayon shows in the deep blacks of the cloak and in the soft grays of the cloudy sky. I notice how the light bandage wrapping the head contrasts with the dark clothing and how the pebbles on the ground are made of tiny dots. At the top and bottom you can still read the printed inscriptions, with LE MALADE in capital letters, which remind us this sheet was published in 1835 as plate 67.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I always look at the sky first and here I am drawn to that pale and cloudy sky, with no sun or stars, weighing over the branches. Behind the figures there is a tangle of thin leafless twigs, like a forest in winter drawn with very light strokes. It makes me think of a cold overcast day, when light spreads evenly and there are no sharp shadows. That light background makes the twisted trunk and the two dark figures stand out more, as if the landscape itself were holding its breath alongside the sick man.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

I see a man sitting who looks very tired, with his head wrapped in a white cloth and big round shoes that almost touch my feet. He is all slumped over and does not want to get up. Behind him there is a lady with a hood and a shawl with little fringes who is taking care of him and seems to put her hand on his shoulder to help him. On one side there is a crooked tree and behind there are lots of little sticks with no leaves. The ground has small stones and everything looks black, white and gray, as if it were very cold.
