What you would seeLo que verías

Centered against a nearly black, completely smooth background, a single lacquered bottle stands upright and is seen straight on, in a symmetrical composition. The form is striking: at the top sits a very short, narrow neck with a tiny mouth, below it a broad, flattened, almost disk-like body that bulges at the shoulders and narrows in a clean diagonal toward the middle. From there it flows into a tall, slender stem that widens again into a flat circular foot, slightly chipped at the front edge. The surface is dominated by a worn vermilion red, orangey and matte, with a soft sheen where the light catches the left shoulder. Across the widest part runs an irregular horizontal band of black; smaller black streaks, specks, and fine scratches are scattered over the body, neck, and stem, where the top layer has worn away. There are hairline cracks, slightly rough patches, and small nicks, especially around the mouth and the base. Gentle studio lighting models the volume and casts a faint reflection on the dark ground. There is no person, text, or other object, and no reference for real scale.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the silhouette, from the narrow mouth to the wide, flattened body and the high foot, and notice how balanced an unusual shape feels. Then move closer to the surface: the scratches and black patches that first look like damage are the detail that transforms the reading of the piece.

ContextContexto

According to the source, this is a sake bottle by an unknown maker, created in Japan between the late 1300s and the late 1500s, during the Muromachi period (1392–1573). It is made in Negoro lacquer and belongs to the Japanese Art department of the Cleveland Museum of Art, which acquired it with the J. H. Wade Fund. Negoro ware is characterized by red lacquer applied over a black layer, intended for everyday use; with handling, the red wears away and the black shows through. It is not known who made it, exactly where it was used, or who owned it.

Curious detailDato curioso

In Negoro lacquer, wear is not a flaw that destroys the design: the red layer was applied over black, so use itself gradually reveals the dark color underneath and becomes part of its beauty.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. What does the wear from use add to an object that signs of age might make less valuable in other traditions?¿Qué le aporta el desgaste por el uso a un objeto que en otras tradiciones perdería valor con las marcas de la edad?
  2. How does the balance between the wide upper body and the narrow stem affect your sense of stability?¿Cómo influye el equilibrio entre el cuerpo superior tan ancho y el tallo estrecho en tu sensación de estabilidad?
  3. If this bottle were still used to serve sake, how would its meaning change compared to seeing it isolated in a museum?

The conservatorLa restauradora

If you look closely you will see what excites me most as a conservator: this is Negoro lacquer, a Japanese technique with a red layer over a black one. The matte vermilion red that covers the whole piece is not even, it shows black speckles and streaks where handling wore away the top coat. Notice the irregular black band across the widest belly, the fine scratches on the stem and the tiny cracks around the mouth. Every little chip tells how this everyday object was held by many hands.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

To me it looks like a small planet floating in the void. Against that smooth black background with no stars, the bottle hovers alone, symmetrical and centered, as if in zero gravity. Its wide flattened body looks like a disc seen face on, with a tiny narrow neck on top and a circular flat foot below. The soft studio light brings out an orangey glow on the left shoulder, like sunrise over a curved horizon. It makes me think of silence, balance and how something simple can feel monumental in darkness.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a funny toy! It has a huge round belly like a standing donut, then it gets super skinny like a little stick and ends in a flat foot. On top it has a teeny tiny mouth, where the sake must come out in a thin little stream. It is carrot orange-red, but it is all scratched and you can see the black underneath, as if the paint wore off from so much use. I want to hug it because it looks all alone in the middle of the darkness.
