embroidery, silk and applied gold leaf on silk ground

What you would seeLo que verías

The kimono is displayed fully extended on a black lacquered rack, in a T-shape with wide sleeves and a long straight body, photographed frontally against a deep navy-blue background. The ground fabric is pale gold silk with a soft metallic sheen and gentle creases that convey weight and texture. Densely embroidered upon it are seven or eight asymmetrical floral motifs: weeping cherry trees with sinuous trunks in warm brown and gold, crowned with clusters of blossoms in white, peach, orange and indigo blue, with small leaves in dark green and gold. On the shoulders and near the hem are clumps of irises or daffodils with long pointed leaves in green and blue and basket-woven bulbs. The silk threads create smooth velvety surfaces while applied gold leaf adds warm glints. Light is even and frontal, emphasizing the relief of satin, couching and outline stitches. No human figure is present; the scale suggests an adult body. Subtle details such as the central vertical seams and the slightly uneven lower hem are visible on close looking.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First take in the overall golden glow, then follow how the embroidered clusters float asymmetrically across the silk. Notice the twisted trunks and layered petals in relief, turning the garment into a poetic landscape. Finally imagine how little of this brilliance an audience would glimpse beneath an outer robe in motion.

ContextContexto

According to source data, this is a nuihaku, a costume made specifically for Noh theatre, dated 1675–1699 within Japan's Edo period (1615–1868). Noh developed from 14th-century folk plays into a refined court and shrine art of ritual, drama, dance and music, with minimal plots drawn from medieval myths and poetry and all roles performed by men. Robes embroidered on a gold ground were reserved for female roles and worn underneath the outer garment, so only glimpsed in performance. Its proportions, embroidery stitches and lack of hip decoration help place it at the turn of the 17th to 18th century. The design of cherry trees and irises in snow was probably inspired by a medieval Japanese poem.

Curious detailDato curioso

Noh costumes were often the most valuable part of a production, with gold grounds designed to catch flickering torchlight in shrines and courts.

I pause at how this pale gold silk still breathes even while hanging on a black lacquered mount. I see the soft wrinkles and the metallic sheen of the ground, and on top the raised embroidery: flat velvety stitches forming sinuous trunks in golden brown and canopies full of blossoms in white, peach, orange and indigo blue. The applied gold leaf gives warm sparkles and the couching secures the threads without stressing the cloth. It moves me that this work was made to be glimpsed beneath another layer on stage.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I look at this T-shaped kimono as if it were a map of the night sky. The pale gold ground is like a faint milky way and the deep blue around it reminds me of the firmament. Across that field float vegetal constellations: seven or eight weeping cherry trees with starry canopies in white and orange, and below clumps of iris with long leaves like green and blue comets. Each blossom is a stitched star under even frontal light that makes the raised work shine like illuminated craters.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a magic princess dress floating with no one inside. It is light gold and shines a little as if it had star dust on it. It has lots of little trees with white and orange flowers and tiny green leaves, as if spring got stuck to the cloth. Down below there are plants with long pointy leaves. I like to count the blossoms and look at the wiggly trunks in golden brown. I want to get close to touch the fluffy embroidery, but I can only look.
