What you would seeLo que verías

Set against a soft vignetted background fading from dark charcoal at the top to pale gray at the center, the hilt and upper blade of a small-sword are shown in strict vertical alignment. The polished steel blade, narrow with a central fuller and sharp symmetrical edges, catches a strong highlight and extends downward out of the frame. Above it sits the hilt: a small oval shell-guard shaped like a shallow dish, pierced and chased with gilt edges and a central cartouche bearing a tiny face in relief, with two small looped quillons underneath. A curved knuckle-bow rises from the guard to the pommel; its surface is densely textured like twisted rope and interrupted midway by an oval medallion. The grip is cylindrical, wrapped in spiraled steel wire interwoven with braided wire bands and dark leather over a wood core, giving a tactile, ridged texture. The globular pommel at the top, in russeted and partly gilt steel, is engraved with foliate blossoms. Studio lighting is crisp and directional, emphasizing contrasts between matte russet, bright silver wire and warm gilding. The object reads as a dress accessory scaled for the waist, not a battlefield weapon.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start at the chiseled pommel and trace down the spiral wire of the grip to the gilded shell-guard. Look closely at the oval plaque on the knuckle-bow and the way light separates matte russet from glittering wire. Notice that the blade is almost plain: all the display was meant for the part seen above the scabbard.

ContextContexto

According to Cleveland Museum of Art records, this is a small-sword dated about 1780, attributed to France, possibly Paris, 18th century, by an unknown maker. Materials noted are a forged steel blade and a partly gilt and russet steel hilt with steel wire, leather bands and a wood core. The museum description explains that during the 1700s the small-sword was a light, quick thrusting weapon carried by unarmored civilian noblemen, which gradually became more a fashionable accessory to male dress than a life-or-death weapon, so the hilt — visible when sheathed — became the focus for elaborate decoration. These swords mark a final refined stage in sword evolution from ancient edged weapons to the elegant blades of the 1700s and 1800s. No maker or original owner is recorded.

Curious detailDato curioso

On an 18th-century small-sword the steel hilt was often chemically browned to a russet color and then selectively gilded, a technique that both protected against rust and made the decoration stand out when the sword hung at the side of an embroidered coat.

  1. What does the contrast between a plain blade and an ornate hilt tell you about display versus use?¿Qué te comunica este objeto sobre la idea de masculinidad elegante en el siglo XVIII?
  2. How does an object designed for protection become a sign of social rank?¿En qué momento un arma deja de ser herramienta de combate y se vuelve joya de estatus?

Three guides, three ways of lookingTres guías, tres miradas

The conservatorLa restauradora

If you look closely you will see why this piece moves me. The polished steel blade reflects the light, but the fragile part is the hilt. That reddish tone is the russet bluing, and that wire wrapped in a spiral over leather and wood is steel wire, not silver. Gilding appears only on edges and on the spherical pommel with foliage. My job is to preserve that contrast between matte and shine without erasing the elegant wear of an accessory that was displayed at the waist more than used in combat.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see this short sword like a vertical constellation. The narrow double-edged blade is like a luminous axis leaving the frame, like a meridian of steel. The small oval pierced guard reminds me of a tiny planet with a face on its central escutcheon. The curved knuckle bow traces an orbit leading to the spherical pommel, a little chiseled sun. The whole piece shines with reflected light, not its own, just like the stars we study.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This sword looks like a prince sword but it is small. It is not for fighting in wars, it is for looking elegant at parties, like a fancy accessory for men long ago. I like the grip because it looks like it has a little metal string wrapped around it and dark leather. On top it has a little ball with golden flowers and below a little dish with a tiny face in the middle. The blade shines a lot and looks very sharp, even though they wore it more to show off than to fight.

  1. #1

In the image I see a very bright shine on a long and narrow metal part. What is that part of the sword called?

    HintPista

It is the long pointed part going down and out of the frame, with two edges and a mirror-like shine.

  2. #2

Find the decorated little ball at the very top of the hilt, with foliage and golden touches. What does the record call it?

    HintPista

It is above the wire-wrapped grip and closes the sword at the top, it is round and golden.

  3. #3

Among the colors in the record there is a warm gold that lights the edges of the guard and the pommel. What metallic tone is it?

    HintPista

Think of the color of the medallion on the knuckle bow and the chiseled details on the pommel.
