What you would seeLo que verías
The print presents a horizontal nocturnal landscape, hushed and misty, rendered in deep blacks, charcoal greys and smoky whites. The sky fills more than the upper half, heavy with dense, velvety clouds achieved through etching and mezzotint; near the centre, a delicate crescent moon hangs low and pale, its light just piercing the gloom. Below, the dark, soft silhouette of Screel Hill and surrounding hills cuts against the sky, with rounded contours and blended volumes. In the middle ground, a calm sheet of water — the Urr estuary — mirrors the sky and moon like a tarnished silver mirror. In the foreground on the left, a narrow pier or jetty cuts diagonally into the water; at its tip, three or four tiny figures, mere dark smudges, sit or stand beside a small boat, gazing outward. The water surface shows subtle ripples and a faint vertical spark of moonlight reflection. The white paper margin frames the image, with handwritten annotations and a signature along the bottom edge, and the dusty, granular texture of the mezzotint becomes apparent on close looking, creating depth and atmosphere.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Let your eye travel from the crescent moon down along its trembling reflection on the water. Then follow the diagonal pier to the tiny silhouettes that give human scale to the vast landscape. Finally notice how the darkness of the hills is not flat but vibrates with grey nuances that suggest mist and distance.
ContextContexto
The work is titled Screel Hill and Urr Water from Kypford by Frank Short (British, 1857–1945), active from the late 19th through the first half of the 20th century. According to data from the Cleveland Museum of Art, where it is housed, it is a Print in the Prints department, made with etching and mezzotint and dated broadly to 1872–1945, attributed to England, 20th century. It depicts a real Scottish view near Kippford in Dumfries and Galloway. The mezzotint technique allowed Short to achieve rich, velvety blacks and subtle tonal gradations particularly suited to nocturnes. No further details about the exact date or circumstances of its making are given in the source.
Curious detailDato curioso
Frank Short was a leading figure in the British etching revival and served as president of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers; his mastery of mezzotint involved darkening the entire plate and then burnishing out the lights, like the slender lunar glow seen here.

What hooks me is the material of the print. Frank Short used etching and mezzotint to achieve those deep, velvety blacks you see in the sky. If you look close, you will notice the dusty grain and the gradations from charcoal gray to smoky white, made with aquatint. The white paper margin, with its handwritten signature below, protects the image and reminds us this is a print. The misty atmosphere is no accident: it is total control of tone and light.

I just keep looking up. The sky takes up more than half the image, covered with dense clouds that barely let the light through. Right in the center hangs a thin, pale crescent moon, very low, and its reflection forms a vertical glimmer on the calm water of the Urr estuary. It is a very dark night, with no visible stars, where that moon is the only light. It makes me think about how hard it is to engrave darkness without everything turning solid black.
A mí me deja mirando hacia arriba.

It looks like nighttime and everyone is quiet. The hills in the back are like the backs of sleeping animals, all dark and soft. The water is like a dirty mirror copying the sky. On the left there is a skinny pier going in diagonally and at the very tip there are three or four tiny people next to a boat, like little ants looking at the moon. I like it because it feels a bit chilly and makes you want to be hugged.
