Silk: lampas weave

What you would seeLo que verías

The piece is a rectangular textile fragment, wider than it is tall, photographed flat against an almost white, plain background. Its edges are irregular and frayed, with small fringes along the top, notches at the corners, and several thin horizontal tears that let the background show through as white lines. The silk, in browns, beiges, and a sepia darkened by time, is covered by a repeated, very dense pattern with no empty spaces. Two large, complete circular medallions dominate the center; others are cut off by the edges, suggesting a cloth that was originally much larger. Inside each circle, stylized birds confront one another in symmetrical pairs, above and below, around a vertical palmette tree. Their bodies show marked wings and breasts filled with a grid of tiny dots. Between the circles are diamond or octagonal shapes holding a five-petalled flower, bordered by bands of ornamental inscription. The gaps between the main forms are filled with a minute geometric lattice and curling vegetal motifs. The light is even, without strong shadows, revealing the fine, slightly rough and brittle texture of the weave, its matte surface, and the contrast between the pale lines of the drawing and the dark ground.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First follow the two complete roundels and notice how the birds repeat by symmetry, some upright and some inverted. Then move to the diamonds between them and look for the five-petalled flower and the inscription-like bands. Finally, step back: the cut-off motifs at the edges reveal that this is only a surviving piece of a much larger cloth.

ContextContexto

According to the source data, this is a silk in lampas weave by an unknown maker, dated only as before 1975. It is attributed to Iran or Iraq, in the style of the Buyid period (945–1055) or the Seljuq period (1037–1194), so it probably imitates or continues medieval models; exactly when it was woven is not known. The source relates — as reported, not verified, information — that similar fragments came from garments, shrouds, and tomb covers unearthed in the early 1900s at Bibi Shahr Banu, near ancient Rayy, a few miles from Tehran. It preserves a beginning or finishing edge at the bottom and a small portion of selvage on the left. It is now in the collection of the Cleveland Museum of Art.

Curious detailDato curioso

Surprising visual observation: thanks to the pattern's double symmetry, the birds that appear upright at the bottom of each roundel reappear inverted at the top, so the design reads almost the same if the fragment is turned upside down.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. What changes when you realize the birds and trees are not naturalistic scenes, but parts of an endless repeating pattern?¿Qué cambia cuando descubres que las aves y los árboles no son escenas naturalistas, sino partes de un patrón que se repite sin fin?
  2. Does the fragment's worn, funerary reported past change the way you see its ornamental beauty?
  3. If the original cloth was much larger, what uses — garment, shroud, tomb cover, hanging — can you imagine for it, and what in the design supports your idea?

The conservatorLa restauradora

If you look closely you will see this is not a perfect fabric, it is a fragile fragment that has survived. Its edges are frayed and broken, with notches and thin white lines where the silk split open. It still keeps a starting border at the bottom and a bit of selvedge on the left, clues to how it was woven in lampas. The brown and beige tones are not just colors, they are time passing over the silk. I am struck by how dense the pattern is, with no empty space, and at the same time how delicate and brittle it looks to the touch.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

This is like a constellation made into textile. Two large circular medallions dominate the center like full moons, and others cut off by the edges tell us the universe was much larger. Inside each circle there is a symmetrical system, two confronted birds above and below a palmette tree, as if orbiting a central axis. Between those suns appear lozenges with five-petaled flowers and bands with inscriptions that work like orbits. Everything is connected by a fine geometric mesh, an orderly and repeating map of the sky.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a very old little blanket for a treasure. It is full of repeating little drawings and if you count them you see big circles like wheels. Inside each wheel there are two little birds looking at each other, with marked wings and dotted chests, above and below a little tree. Between the wheels there are lozenges with tiny five-petaled flowers. Everything is light and dark brown like cookies. It is torn all around and has tiny fringes on top. I wonder what kind of bird that is and if those birds are friends.
