What you would seeLo que verías
A vertical color woodblock print, with flat areas of ink and clearly defined contours on a slightly aged, cream-colored paper. The lower half is dominated by a steep roof shown diagonally, its dark gray tiles, white edges, and circular tile ends creating a rhythm that seems to slide toward the bottom. Upon it, three figures tangle in a theatrical fight. At center, standing barefoot and larger in scale, a man raises a katana with a green hilt high above his head; his face twists downward, his disheveled hair bristles, and his dark blue kimono with green rosettes and red lining billows open. Before him crouches a figure seen from behind, wearing a red-and-white garment with circles and spirals, a black sash, and a light blue headcloth. At right, another man falls upside down, legs in the air, in green patterned clothing and red-and-white cloth. A long staff with a black, spiky grappling head crosses the scene, and another similar weapon lies abandoned at lower left. Behind them stretch blue water, low green hills, and a deep blue sky with pale clouds. At upper right is a pink cartouche with columns of Japanese text; another with the signature sits at lower right.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the raised sword and follow the diagonal of the roof downward, as if sliding along with the combat. Then notice the fallen body on the right and the weapon abandoned at lower left: the scene reads as one instant within a longer fall. Finally, look at the calm sea and hills, which heighten the chaos in the foreground.

I look at the cream paper, slightly aged, and the flat inks with clean outlines that reveal the color woodblock print; I pause on the roof of dark gray tiles with white edges that dominates the lower half and on how the long pole with a black hooked end cuts across the fight, and I think about the fragility of paper against the violent gesture of the barefoot actor raising the katana with a green hilt while his dark blue kimono with green rosettes and red lining flies open with the movement.

I am no kabuki expert but I look up as if at the sky in the print, that intense blue with pale clouds opening over the blue water and the low green hills; I am struck that such a theatrical fight happens under a calm sky, as if the actors Arashi Rikan II and Nakamura Utaemon III were fighting between the earth of the diagonal roof and an orderly cosmos, and I wonder how that flat blue background makes us feel the height from which the figure in green patterned clothing is falling headfirst.

It looks like they are play-fighting on the roof and one is about to fly off! The man in the middle is barefoot, with an angry face and wild spiky hair, lifting a huge sword with a green handle; another is crouched with his back to us in red and white clothes with circles and swirls, and the third is falling headfirst with legs in the air in his green kimono; the slippery gray roof makes me giggle and feel nervous, and I love the two long poles with black hooks, one lying on the ground.
