hanging scroll; ink on silk
What you would seeLo que verías
This is a vertical hanging scroll, much taller than wide, painted only in black ink on silk that has now darkened to a grayish, earthy brown. The composition reads diagonally, from the upper right downward: almost all the visual weight sits on the right side, while the center-left remains a broad emptiness of water or mist. At upper right, a dense cluster of bamboo leans forcefully to the left; the stalks are fine curved lines, the leaves dark, elongated, overlapping blotches, as if swept by a gust. A similar cluster fills the lower right corner, also bent, and a third, smaller one grows beside a large rock in the foreground below. In the center, between the two main clusters, a pale shore opens with rounded rocks in very black ink and a small curved fence or little bridge at left, barely drawn with thin lines. Faint circular strokes suggest eddies and ripples across the empty surface, and small dots and loose leaves float through the air. No people or animals can be clearly distinguished. The light comes from no visible source: it arises from the contrast between the unpainted silk and masses of nearly black ink. The texture is soft, fibrous, and aged, with the mounting's edge just visible at the sides.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Begin with the empty expanse on the left, then follow the diagonal toward the bamboo thickets on the right. Notice how the leaves are increasingly bent and scattered as you move your gaze. The small bridge and the faint ripples in the center change the reading: this is not only vegetation, but a place crossed by air and water in motion.
ContextContexto
According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is a hanging scroll in ink on silk titled *Bamboo in Wind*, dated to the early 1500s and associated with the Muromachi period (1392–1573). It was traditionally attributed to the Japanese painter Genga, but it bears neither signature nor seals, so that attribution rested on comparisons of brushwork. More recent study keeps the 16th century as a plausible date, yet considers the artist's precise cultural identity uncertain: the dark, eccentric rocks, bamboo clusters, and strong tonal contrasts may point to Korean authorship or to Korean influence on a Japanese painter. The source notes that East Asian paintings were often conceived as sets, whose original arrangement is sometimes lost. It is not known whether this scroll belonged to such a set.

Curious detailDato curioso
A striking visual observation: the wind of the title is never drawn directly, yet it is everywhere — in the bending stalks, the leaves swept sideways, and the tiny specks floating through the empty air.

This vertical scroll makes me think about time acting on silk. Today we see it in grayish brown and earthy tones, but it was once pale, and the image lived from the contrast between the unpainted emptiness and the black ink. I notice three groups of bamboo leaning to the left, with thin stalks and leaves like smudges swept by the wind. The dark rocks at the bottom, heavily loaded with ink, hold my attention, along with the faint circular strokes that suggest swirls over water or mist. There is no signature or seal, and the fibrous texture shows its age.

I see this landscape like a sky in motion. The diagonal composition runs from the upper right downward, with bamboos bent like kites caught in the same gust. What intrigues me most is the large emptiness at the center-left, that pale area of water or mist that feels like outer space. The loose leaves floating and the tiny dots in the air are like stardust. There are no clear people or animals, only an invisible wind drawn through its effect on stalks, leaves, and very subtle circular ripples.

It looks like the wind is trying to comb the bamboo! All the little sticks are bent to the same side, as if a giant were blowing really hard. There are lots of tiny black leaves flying and two big bamboo clumps, one at the top and one at the bottom, plus a smaller one next to a rock. In the middle there is a huge empty space that looks like a pool of mist with round little waves. I also spotted a thin curved fence and black rocks that look like sleeping turtles. There are no people, just wind.
