What you would seeLo que verías

A tall, vertical hanging scroll completely filled with the dense, intertwining canopy of five pine trees seen from below. Twisted trunks rise from the bottom edge, their bark suggested by layered ink washes in pale gray and saturated black, with dry-brush strokes, blots and mottled dapples that create a rough, aged texture. Clusters of pine needles fan out in short, spiky, radiating brushstrokes, some dark and crisp, others soft and diluted. The unpainted paper, a warm, yellowed off-white, serves as background and acts like mist or sky, giving breathing space within the thicket. Light is even and diffuse, without cast shadows, typical of ink on paper. In the lower and mid-right areas, the foliage opens to reveal vertical columns of Chinese calligraphy in black semi-cursive script, fluid and varied in thickness, integrated among the branches. Two small red seals appear near the lower left corner. At first glance the image reads as almost abstract; with slow looking, the five main trunks and the rhythmic contrast between wet and dry ink emerge clearly.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First trace the trunks upward from the base to find the five separate trees. Then shift your attention between ink textures and calligraphy; notice how the writing is woven into the foliage rather than added beside it.

ContextContexto

A work by Li Shan (c. 1686–1762), a Chinese painter of the Qing dynasty, Qianlong reign (1736–1795), dated 1747. According to data from the Cleveland Museum of Art, Li was born into a family of scholars and officials in Yangzhou, which gave him education and a court appointment. His favored subjects —orchids, bamboo, pines and flowers— reflect his literati background. Five Pine Trees was painted late in his career and is considered unconventional: rather than realistic rendering, it emphasizes richly modulated brushwork and places semi-cursive calligraphy among the branches to show the kinship between painting and calligraphy. It is a hanging scroll in ink on paper in the Chinese Art collection.

I pause to see how the ink breathes on the yellowish paper. With pale washes and heavily loaded black ink, Li Shan builds rough bark and needle clusters with short fan-like strokes and dry splatters. The tall vertical scroll forces us to look up from below, as if standing beneath the five twisted trunks. What fascinates me is that the running script calligraphy is not in the margin but woven among the branches, with two small red seals below: painting and writing share the same support and the same brush gesture.

I look at this dense foliage and see constellations. The five pines act like five axes rising and intertwining against an empty paper sky that works as mist or cosmic void. Dark and pale alternate like bright and faint stars, made with black ink and diluted gray. The light is diffuse, with no hard shadows, and the very elongated framing reminds me of looking straight up at the zenith. The vertical calligraphy on the right feels like a field note, the observer's log written directly inside the same sky.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a giant tangle! At first I only see lots of little branches and dots, like a gray-green maze. Then I find the five crooked trunks climbing up like snakes and their tops with fan-shaped needles. I like hunting for the darkest spots and the palest washes. The funniest part is that there are Chinese letters hidden among the branches, as if someone wrote a secret inside the forest, with two little red stamps that look like stickers.

The title gives you a clue and you can verify it by tracing the trunks through the tangle.

  2. #2

Among the branches on the right side, what black element in vertical columns with two small red touches below appears?

    HintPista

It is not part of the tree, it is fluid writing with warm-colored little seals near the lower corner.

  3. #3

From the palette, which light yellowish tone corresponds to the unpainted paper that works as sky or mist?
