What you would seeLo que verías
The sculpture is shown in left profile, centered against a smooth background that shifts from dark gray at the top to almost white below. It is a compact, upright seated figure, apparently carved from a single block of stone in grayish-brown and beige tones, with some nearly black areas. Its surface is rough, worn, and porous, with small losses, stains, and edges softened by time. The disproportionately large head dominates the composition. The face looks toward the left: a broad forehead, a barely suggested brow, an almond-shaped closed eye, a wide nose with a dark patch, a partly open mouth suggesting lips and teeth, and a short chin. A small circular hole can be seen in the visible ear. The hair is made with fine, parallel incised lines; several thick braids fall behind the head and along the sides of the neck. The visible arm is bent, with the hand held near the ear, as if listening. The short torso carries curved incised lines, perhaps clothing or ornaments, and a circular, rayed motif with a central point appears on its side. The thick legs are crossed over a bulging oval base that closes the piece at the bottom. Soft light from the left models the volume and casts a short shadow beneath the base.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Begin with the large head and the closed eye, then follow the bent arm toward the ear. Next, look for the incised lines of the hair and torso, and finally notice the rayed circle on the side: that small detail balances the face and reveals how much ornament is concentrated in a very compact figure.
ContextContexto
According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this soapstone figure was made by an unknown carver, possibly in the early 1400s, in the Sapi style of Sierra Leone, West Africa. The source explains that the most varied group of figures and heads of this kind has been found in Kissi homelands. The Kissi called them pomda, “images of the dead,” placed them in ancestral shrines, and offered them the last seeds at sowing time and the first fruits of the harvest. The sculptures are believed to have been made centuries earlier by ancestors of the Kissi, the so-called Sapi people. Its exact original use is not known with certainty.

Curious detailDato curioso
A surprising visual detail: the small perforation in the visible ear echoes another tiny hole at the center of the rayed circle on the body, linking the face and its ornament through two almost hidden points.

I look at this Sapi soapstone figure in left profile and focus on its surface. It is porous, rough and heavily weathered, with dark stains, small losses and edges softened by time. The head is huge compared to the body and holds most of the carving: an almond-shaped closed eye, broad nose, half-open mouth and braids defined by fine parallel incisions. I notice the small circular hole in the ear and the circular motif with rays on the side, perhaps an ornament. The patina in grayish brown, beige and near-black tones speaks of centuries of handling and offerings.

I like to think of this seated figure as a listening antenna. Its hand near the ear and closed eye suggest contemplation, not action. It is carved from a compact vertical block, with legs crossed on an oval base that anchors it like a small planet. The circular motif with a central dot on its side reminds me of a sun or a star engraving. According to the record, the Kissi called it pomda, images of the dead, and offered seeds and fruits on altars. Listening to ancestors was a way to find direction, much as we do by watching the sky.

This little stone person is sitting cross-legged and looks like it is listening to a secret. It has a big head, a little closed eye and a hand held close to the ear. Its hair is many little braids with fine lines and its stony skin looks scratchy and spotted, as if it were very very old. At the bottom it has a chubby base to sit on. I imagine that if I whisper to it, it will tell me stories from long ago, from when people gave it little seeds and fruits on its altar. I want to stay and listen with it too.
