What you would seeLo que verías

Three irregular blocks of painted limestone are mounted against a smooth grey background, slightly offset from one another, like a reconstructed fragment of wall. The upper block shows only the bottom of a larger scene: two bare legs in dark red paint, planted firmly, and the tip of a third foot entering from the left. A thick black line separates this register from the one below. Down below, two portly figures in profile walk to the right, each holding a tray heaped with offerings. On the far left, a figure in reddish-brown with long black hair, a broad collar and a white sash carries plants and wears an animal emblem above the head. At centre, a figure in mottled dark green guides a black-and-white spotted cow by a rope while balancing bread, vessels, vegetables and birds; a goose moves between the animal’s legs. Between and around the figures run vertical columns of polychrome hieroglyphs in ochre, green, red and black, with two large oval cartouches. The relief is low, the stone surface worn and pitted, and the original paint survives in uneven patches, giving bodies a cracked, speckled texture. Small details reward patience: hooves, feathers, stacked loaves, knotted cords and individual signs crowded edge to edge. Overall proportions feel compressed and dense, with almost no empty space.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the two oversized legs at the top, then drop to the much smaller offering bearers below: the change of scale tells you who matters most. Next, look at the emblems held above the figures’ heads and at the spotted cow in step with the central bearer. Finally, read the surface as writing: almost every empty space is filled with signs, food, or symbols.

ContextContexto

The source identifies these as painted limestone blocks from a temple wall, dated to about 1391–1353 BCE, in the New Kingdom, 18th Dynasty, reign of Amenhotep III. The lower figures personify nomes, the provinces of ancient Egypt, identified by emblems on their heads and bringing trays of offerings and sacrificial animals as an image of the land’s bounty. According to the museum, each nome figure’s face is a miniature portrait of Amenhotep III and speaks in the king’s name. The god receiving the offerings stood in the upper register, facing the king. The blocks may come from Amenhotep III’s temple at Kom el-Ahmar, ancient Hebenu, in Middle Egypt; that provenance is probable, not certain.

Curious detailDato curioso

In the complete scene, the god held a scepter combining coiled rope for eternity, tadpoles for hundreds of thousands, and notched palm ribs for years: a visual wish for “an eternity of hundreds of thousands of years.”

The conservatorLa restauradora

I pause on what time left and what it erased. These are three painted limestone blocks, worn and pitted, mounted on a gray backing and slightly misaligned. The polychromy survives in patches: dark reds on skin, mottled greens, ochres and blacks in the hieroglyphs. Below the low relief is dense, with no empty spaces, with laden trays, stacked loaves, feathers and hooves still legible. Above only two legs remain and the tip of a third foot. That crackled texture tells me how much care was once there and how much still needs stabilizing.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see this like a map of the land. Those two chubby figures are not distant gods, they are the nomes, the provinces of Egypt, each with its animal or plant emblem on its head. They move in procession to the right, carrying abundance: loaves, vessels, birds, vegetables and a white cow with black spots led by a rope. Between them, columns of hieroglyphs with two large oval cartouches set the rhythm. Above, legs standing on a thick black line suggest the recipient of the offering. It is cosmic order put into a line.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a stone puzzle. There are three blocks put together a bit crooked and below there are two chubby men walking with lots of food. One has long black hair and carries plants and a little animal on his head, the other is greenish and leads a white cow with black spots tied with a rope. And there is a goose hidden between the cow's legs! Everything is super full, nothing else fits, with little colorful letters everywhere. On top you only see some bare red feet. I like searching for the little stacked loaves.

  1. #1

In the lower register, what four-legged animal, white with black spots, walks forward led by a rope?

    HintPista

Look at the center, between the two laden figures, look for hooves and spots.

  2. #2

At the top, separated by a thick black line, how many bare feet can you partly see?

    HintPista

Count the dark red soles standing on the line, include the tiny tip coming in from the left.

  3. #3

Between the legs of the spotted animal, what bird with a beak peeks out hidden?

    HintPista

Look for feathers and a beak among the four white and black legs.
