The Strolling Musicians, from around 1635, is an etching and drypoint by the Dutch artist Rembrandt van Rijn (1606–1669), held by the Cleveland Museum of Art. According to the museum, although 17th-century Holland produced no especially noteworthy composers or renowned performers, few cultures produced so many visual images of music as the Dutch. The hurdy-gurdy and bagpipes shown here were often associated at the time with itinerant beggars and blind street singers. Rembrandt portrays the pair shuffling wearily from door to door with, in the museum's words, a compassionate understanding of human frailty.

I step closer and the first thing I notice is the linework. It is black ink on cream paper and everything is built with crosshatching. On the left the shading is very dense and leaves the tall musician almost sunken, with his patched cape, his bare dirty foot and his rough beard clearly etched. On the right, the doorway stays lighter and more open. That contrast between the dark foreground and the pale threshold is what gives it its fragility, as if the scene might fade away.

At the door a man in a furry hat, a smiling woman and a chubby baby reaching out his hand are waiting for them, like saying hello.
