A wide, horizontal etching in black ink on cream, slightly aged paper. More than half of the composition is sky, rendered with fine, nearly horizontal parallel lines, faint clouds, and large areas left almost blank, giving a sense of calm, diffuse light without a visible sun. In the lower left foreground, a dark rocky mass, densely cross-hatched, rises beneath a cliff topped with leafy trees and a few tall conifers. At its base are small human figures: a standing man wearing a hat, leaning on a long staff and carrying what appears to be a bundle or backpack, near two seated figures and a smaller fourth figure partly hidden by a mound of earth. In the middle distance, pale slopes lead toward a rocky height with a small blocky structure, possibly a ruin, while faint hills fade into the center. To the right, a dense cluster of leafy trees contrasts with several very tall, thin, sparse pines. Near its edge, tiny against the landscape, a rider on horseback crosses a light clearing. Along the bottom margin read "Stef. de la Bella inuent fecit", "TERRA" in the center, and "ex. Cum Priuil. Regis Christ." on the right.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the enormous empty sky, then descend to the small figures in the left foreground. Follow the clearing toward the horseman and notice how the dense trees on the right balance the rocky mass on the left. The landscape, not the people, is the true portrait of Earth.

ContextContexto

"The Four Elements: Terra", from around 1648, is an etching by Italian artist Stefano della Bella (1610–1664), according to the Cleveland Museum of Art, where the work is held through a gift of The Print Club of Cleveland. In early modern European art, earth, water, air, and fire formed a traditional set for understanding the natural world, often depicted as a series. Here, "terra"—Latin for earth—is represented not by a mythological figure, but by hills, rocks, trees, and rural life. The specific place shown is not known; it is probably an imagined landscape rather than an identifiable location.

The Print Club of Cleveland.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. Why represent Earth through an ordinary landscape instead of a god, a symbol, or an abundance of crops?¿Por qué representar la Tierra con un paisaje común y no con un dios, un símbolo o una abundancia de cosechas?
  2. How does our perception of nature change when human figures are so small within it?¿Cómo cambia nuestra idea de la naturaleza cuando las figuras humanas son tan pequeñas dentro de ella?
  3. What might the other three prints in the series emphasize if this one gives so much space to the sky?¿Qué podrían destacar los otros tres grabados de la serie si en este se deja tanto espacio al cielo?

Three guides, three ways of lookingTres guías, tres miradas

The conservatorLa restauradora

As a conservator I focus on the black ink on the aged cream paper and how the fine parallel lines in the sky create a calm diffuse light without a visible sun and on the left I notice the dark rocky mass built with dense crosshatching that contrasts with the pale distant hills and I am drawn to the lower margin inscription with TERRA at the center and Stef de la Bella inuent fecit which reminds me of the delicate care needed to preserve such seventeenth century etched lines

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

As a sky watcher I am struck by how more than half of the image is sky made with almost horizontal fine lines and empty white areas that give a calm even light with no visible sun and I see how that broad horizon lets the pale hills fade into the distance and when I contrast it with the dark cliff and leafy trees on the left I understand that the idea of earth here is the whole landscape under that serene dome

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

I like to search for tiny things in big pictures and on the left I found a man with a hat and a long staff next to others sitting down and one more half hidden behind a little mound and on the right very small there is a rider on horseback among wide trees and super tall thin pines and everything feels calm as if the pale sky were hugging the hills and the dark rocks where I imagine playing hide and seek
