What you would seeLo que verías
A tall, narrow vertical woodblock print in tanzaku format, to be read from top to bottom like a slender window. At the top, a reddish band fading to white through a soft bokashi gradation evokes dawn sky; black vertical calligraphy floats in the center and the artist's signature with a small red square seal appears on the left. Below, a broad expanse of indigo and pale blue suggests calm sea, with two whitish upright rocks on the distant horizon to the right and a misty, pale shoreline stretching across. In the middle ground, a small peninsula covered by a dense, almost black grove of trees encircles a cluster of houses with grey thatched roofs and reddish walls, with wooden piers extending into the water. In the foreground, a curving shoreline traces a pale sandy beach edged by foamy waves rendered with white and blue lines; five tiny figures wade ankle-deep, carrying baskets and bundles, their kimonos in muted ochre, blue and white with subtle reflections on the wet surface. The light is serene and diffuse, the colors flat and translucent typical of woodblock printing, with delicate textures in the rippling water and foliage and a careful balance between empty space and minute human detail.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Begin at the red gradation at the top and let your eye travel down through the empty blue sea to the wooded peninsula. Pause on the five tiny figures in the shallows: their small scale reveals the vastness of the landscape and turns a daily chore into a quiet, poetic moment.

Curious detailDato curioso
The elongated vertical format and the bokashi fading from deep red to white at the top showcase a technical achievement of late ukiyo-e to create atmospheric depth without Western perspective.

Look how the paper breathes in this very narrow print. I pause at the sky's gradation, that bokashi shifting from intense reddish to white without a hard line, achieved by controlled rubbing of the block. Below, the sea blues are printed in transparent, overlapping layers. The pale shore and foamy waves show perfect registration between blocks. It is a fragile woodblock print, where each tone of ochre, grey and blue reveals the printer's hand and the loving wear of time.

For me everything starts at the top, in that reddish band announcing dawn. It is low tide, and that is no coincidence: the moon governs the water. At Susaki the sea retreats and leaves the sand exposed, as Hiroshige painted around 1837. Those five tiny silhouettes walking with baskets seize the brief window the sky provides. In the background, the two white rocks on the horizon act as quiet beacons under a serene, diffuse light that envelops everything.

I love that it is so tall and skinny, like peeking through a crack! At the top the sky looks like sunrise in red and then there is lots of calm blue sea. Down below there is a little beach with whitish waves and five very tiny people walking with water at their feet, carrying baskets and parasols. There is a dark little island with lots of little trees, houses with grey roofs and wooden piers. If you look closely, the colorful kimonos are reflected in the wet water like a little mirror.
