What you would seeLo que verías

A small horizontal etching in black ink on warm, cream-colored paper, surrounded by a thin plate border and a wider, slightly grayed margin. On the left, a bearded, barefoot man in a long, loose robe stands in profile, leaning forward with both hands raised in a speaking or blessing gesture. Before him kneels a man in ample robes, head deeply bowed, arms crossed over his chest, also barefoot, at the edge of a shallow stream suggested by a few horizontal lines. Behind them rises a rugged, shadowy rock face with dense cross-hatching, sparse trees, and a twisted trunk at the upper left. At center, a younger attendant in a short tunic holds a tall staff and the bridle of a camel that turns its head toward the right. To the right crowds a retinue of men in tunics, turbans, and feathered headdresses, some carrying spears and a round shield, others holding cloths or bundles; a small child-like figure stands among them. In the upper right, a covered litter or carriage draped with cloth carries a seated figure shaded by an enormous round parasol. Fine, nervous etched lines model fur, foliage, fabric folds, and skin; highlights are simply the untouched paper. At lower right, small plants, a fallen object on the ground, and the signature anchor the foreground.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start on the left, with the two figures isolated by empty ground, then let your eye travel right toward the increasingly crowded retinue. Compare the kneeling man's bowed head with the onlookers who stare directly outward. The camel and the parasol reveal that this intimate religious moment is interrupting a journey.

ContextContexto

The source identifies this etching as *Deacon Philip Baptising the Eunuch*, by German artist Christian Wilhelm Ernst Dietrich (1712–1774), held by the Cleveland Museum of Art as a gift of Mr. and Mrs. Wesley C. Williams. The inscription at lower right appears to read “Dietricj f. 1740,” so the work was probably made in 1740, within the source's broad range of 1727–74. The subject comes from Acts 8 in the New Testament: the evangelist Philip meets and baptizes an Ethiopian official in service to Queen Candace. Dietrich, who signed some works “Dietricy,” was known in his lifetime for absorbing and reworking styles of earlier Dutch masters, especially Rembrandt. The exact print run and original context of this impression are not stated in the source.

Curious detailDato curioso

In the lower right corner the artist left his signature and date drawn directly into the etched linework, so the autograph is part of the printing plate itself: every impression pulled from that plate carries the same handwritten “1740.”

  1. Who is the true center of this scene: the man performing the baptism, the man receiving it, or the crowd that watches?¿Quién es el verdadero centro de la escena: quien bautiza, quien recibe el bautizo o la multitud que observa?
  2. What changes in the story when a private act of faith is shown surrounded by servants, weapons, a camel, and a royal carriage?¿Qué cambia en la historia cuando un acto íntimo de fe se muestra rodeado de sirvientes, armas, un camello y un carruaje real?
  3. How does a European artist of 1740 imagine a biblical journey in Ethiopia and the Near East, and what details reveal that imagination?¿Cómo imagina un artista europeo de 1740 un viaje bíblico por Etiopía y el Cercano Oriente, y qué detalles delatan esa imaginación?

Three guides, three ways of lookingTres guías, tres miradas

The conservatorLa restauradora

If you look closely you will see there is no white ink, the light is simply the warm cream paper left untouched, and everything else is nervous black line. Dietrich's 1740 etching reads in layers of crosshatching, very dense on the rocky wall to the left and lighter for the stream suggested with horizontal lines. I notice the greyish margin and the fine plate mark, how the folds of the tunics and the camel's coat are modeled only with threads of ink. At the lower right, among little plants and a fallen object, the signature sits as a discreet anchor for the foreground.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

This scene is small and horizontal, but it happens under an open sky I imagine as very bright. To the right travels a litter draped with cloths and a huge round parasol, like a portable moon giving shade to the Ethiopian official. To the left, Philip, bearded and barefoot, speaks with raised hands while the other man kneels with arms crossed at the edge of the stream. Between them stands the camel and its young keeper with a tall staff. The dark rocks and the twisted trunk above cut the horizon, leaving the center luminous as if midday fell right over the baptism.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

I like hunting for treasures in this print full of people. To the left the bearded man is barefoot and talks with his hands up, and in front of him the other man is kneeling with arms crossed as if he were cold or shy. In the middle there is a camel turning its head and a young man holding it with a long staff. To the right many men crowd together with turbans and feathers, spears and a round shield, carrying cloths. Higher up goes a litter with a giant parasol like a beach umbrella. Down below there are little plants and something dropped on the ground to spot.

What long-necked animal is at the center, turning its head to the right, held by a young man with a staff?

    HintPista

Look at the center, between the kneeling man and the group on the right, it is the only large animal with a bridle.

  2. #2

At the upper right, what large round object shades the seated figure on the litter?

    HintPista

It looks like a huge umbrella covering the cloth-draped litter, above the entourage.

  3. #3

What warm color is the paper Dietrich left uninked to create the light?

    HintPista

Think of the light background of the whole print, it is the cream tone listed in the record.
