What you would seeLo que verías

A black-and-white etching on cream paper, in horizontal format, shows a vast open square seen from a slightly elevated viewpoint, with a deep one-point perspective. Two long, three-story buildings with ground-floor arcades, rows of arched windows, balustrades, chimneys and awnings run along the left and right edges, converging toward the background. At the center, in the distance, stands St. Mark's Basilica, recognizable by its five domes and pointed pinnacles, and beside it rises the very tall, slender campanile, ending in an open belfry and a pyramidal spire. The foreground is a wide stone pavement dotted with dozens of small figures in 18th-century dress: long cloaks, full skirts, tricorn hats, canes and fans. Some walk in pairs, others chat in circles, make a bow, or observe; at left there is a stall or carriage with a canopy and a ladder. The sky occupies almost half the image, filled with voluminous clouds drawn with fine hatching and dense cross-hatching. There is no actual color: light and shadow are built from line alone, giving a grainy texture to stone, fabric and clouds. Along the lower edge runs a Latin inscription in cursive script.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the two long facades and follow them to the basilica and campanile, to feel the perspective pulling you in. Then come back to the foreground and move slowly among the small figures and conversations. Finally, look up: the vast etched sky makes the architecture and the crowd seem lower and more exposed.

ContextContexto

According to the source, this etching was made in 1741 by the Italian artist Michele Marieschi (1710–1743) and belongs to the Cleveland Museum of Art. It is a veduta, a detailed view of a famous place, a genre that flourished in 18th-century Venice among collectors and travelers. The scene shows St. Mark's Square, with the basilica, the campanile and the long porticoed buildings of the Procuratie. Marieschi published a celebrated series of views of Venice in 1741, two years before his death. It is not known for certain whether this sheet belonged to that exact edition from the outset.

Curious detailDato curioso

The campanile seen at the center is the version of the tower that collapsed suddenly in 1902; it was rebuilt 'as it was and where it was' and inaugurated in 1912.

  1. What does this orderly, almost theatrical view of the square include, and what might it leave out of everyday life in 1741?¿Qué incluye esta vista ordenada y casi teatral de la plaza, y qué podría estar dejando fuera de la vida cotidiana de 1741?
  2. How would the experience of the square change if we heard its sounds and saw it in color?¿Cómo cambiaría la experiencia de la plaza si escucháramos sus sonidos y la viéramos a color?
  3. Why do you think travelers wanted to take home images like this one of Venice?¿Por qué crees que los viajeros querían llevarse a casa imágenes como esta de Venecia?

I focus on the material of this print: cream paper worked only with black line. Notice how Marieschi builds light with dense hatching and fine strokes, with no real color, just ink. The sky takes up almost half the sheet and is full of voluminous clouds made of grainy lines. Below, the Latin inscription in cursive runs along the edge. I am interested in how the perspective and the stone pavement are preserved despite the delicacy of the paper.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

From this slightly elevated viewpoint the square becomes an urban observatory. The two long three-story Procuratie buildings with arcades and balustrades converge toward a single vanishing point where the basilica with five domes and the very tall campanile topped with a pyramidal spire stand. I love the sky, which fills half the image: those clouds modeled with hatching look like wind maps. Light is distributed only with line, as if the Venetian sun were drawn with shadow.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like the square is huge and full of tiny little people! I see dozens of figurines with long capes, wide skirts and three-cornered hats, some walking in pairs, others chatting in circles or bowing. On the left there is something like a stall with an awning and a ladder. Everything is in black and white on cream paper, so I imagine painting the fluffy clouds and the chimneys of the long buildings. Which little figure would you be?
