If you get close to the creamy paper you will see how the brown ink does all the work. The line is restless and becomes very dense in the shadows of the tunics, but stays light on skin and sky, where the hatching is parallel and quick. Look at the cylindrical altar with smoke rising, the double-bladed axe held high, and the low stone platform with little plants and sandals. It is a pen drawing from the 1770s, with a bold and energetic stroke, and I am drawn to how the contrast between dark and light builds suspense.

I look at the composition as if it were a frieze under an open sky. The crowd fills the entire foreground and behind there is only a large tree on a stone pedestal, tall shrubs, distant hills and clouds made with rapid hatching. There is no night or stars, it is a daytime scene frozen at the instant before the blow. The bare-backed youth kneels beside the altar and a man on the left lunges with open hands to interrupt. That pause, between action and reaction, is what keeps me looking.

This scene looks like a movie on pause! In the center there is a bearded man lifting a huge axe with two blades and a kneeling young man with his hands behind his back, next to an altar puffing little smoke. On the left someone rushes to stop him with hands wide open and everyone else makes big gestures, some cover their faces and others raise their hands. On the right there are women bringing a hand to the forehead. If you look down you will see sandals, curls and tiny little plants on the stone.
