On a tall, cream-coloured sheet with almost no background, a nude woman sits in the right half of the page, seen in three-quarter view from the front. Her body forms a long diagonal: head high at upper right, legs stretched down toward the lower left corner, bare feet nearly touching the edge of the paper. Her skin is modelled softly in black and red crayon, with warm reddish contours along her arms, sides and legs, and cooler grey shading beneath her thighs and calves. She has abundant, wavy, reddish-blond hair falling over her shoulders and down one side of her chest in loose strands. Her face is oval, pale, with a neutral mouth and eyes looking slightly upward, directly out at the viewer. Her left arm is bent and her loosely closed hand rests against her chest, holding a lock of hair; her right arm drops down, partly hidden behind her torso. Her breasts, navel and the gentle volume of her belly and hips are rendered without harsh lines. No chair or prop is drawn: she seems seated on a sloping, invisible surface, betrayed only by a dark shadow cast behind her legs. At lower right, a very faint signature and date can barely be made out on the paper.

According to the museum, it was drawn from a model in the Royal Academy's life school when Mulready was 73. He was one of the Academy's most devoted teachers: he would pose the model for his students and then draw alongside them. Life drawing was central to academic training in 19th-century England. The model's name is not known, and it is not recorded whether this sheet was made as a teaching exercise or as a finished independent work.

The lady is sitting but you cannot see what on. She looks like she is floating on the paper. Her legs are very long and almost reach the edge of the sheet. She has long, wavy hair the color of reddish gold that covers her chest a little. With one hand she holds her hair and she looks up, right at me, but without smiling. I like that there is nothing behind her, just the light color of the paper and a dark shadow underneath. She looks calm, as if she is resting.
