What you would seeLo que verías
At the center of a smooth background that shifts from almost black at the top to dark gray below, a small flat plaque stands vertically, shown in strict profile facing left. It is a stylized bird carved from a pale, creamy piece of bone, with beige, tan, and light brown mottling, especially across the head and the lower right edge. The surface looks dry, slightly grainy, and worn, with fine cracks, tiny pits, and darker specks gathered in the recesses. The head is large and rounded, out of proportion to the body, and ends in a short, open beak formed by two straight points separated by a deep horizontal notch. No eye is marked. Below a narrow neck, the compact body widens and is crossed by several bold, dark, diagonal incisions, made at different angles, suggesting folded wings or layered feathers. Some lines meet and form sharp triangles. On the lower left a small horizontal projection sticks out, perhaps a leg or part of the original silhouette, while the base ends in an irregular, almost straight cut. The lighting is soft and even, with no harsh shadows, emphasizing the contrast between the pale bone, the blackened grooves, and the dark background. The piece feels tiny, fragile, and intimate in scale.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the open beak on the left and follow the silhouette downward: that alone is enough to recognize the bird. Then look at the diagonal cuts, which suggest wings and feathers without actually drawing them. Finally, notice what is missing —eye, legs, tail— and how the figure still reads clearly.
ContextContexto
According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this small bone carving, dated to around 2000 BCE and possibly from Jericho, in present-day territory associated in the source with Israel, was a decorative inlay for a box. Its maker is unknown. In the ancient Near East, small plaques of bone or ivory were set into wooden furniture and containers; the wood usually decayed, leaving only these durable pieces. That is probably why the bird survives on its own, detached from the object it once adorned. Its exact place of manufacture and the box it belonged to are not known.

Curious detailDato curioso
Surprising visual observation: the bird has no carved eye, legs, or detailed wing, yet it is instantly recognizable from its open beak, rounded head, and upright posture alone.

I pause at how fragile this little plaque of pale cream bone with ochre and light brown stains is. I see fine cracks, tiny pits and dark dots gathered in the crevices where time has settled. The diagonal incisions that form the wings hold darkened dust that helps us read the design. It moves me that the wood of the box was lost and only this inlay remained. It is tiny, grainy and dry, and that is why the even light protects it so gently against the dark background.

I see this strict profile facing left and I think of constellations. That compact body crossed by diagonal lines reminds me of folded wings as if it were about to glide at night. The open beak with two points seems to catch air. I like to imagine it as a tiny figure cut out against a sky that fades from almost black to dark gray. It is an ancient silhouette, from around 2000 BCE, that still suggests flight even though it is a motionless little bone plaque.

It looks like a tiny cookie-cutter little bird. It has a big round head and a small open beak as if it wants to sing or eat. On its belly it has lots of crossed lines that are its folded little wings. It is cream colored with light brown spots and it looks very old and a bit rough. It stands alone on a dark background and looks to the left. I find it sweet because it is missing a little foot and the bottom edge is a bit uneven.
