What you would seeLo que verías

A vertical black-and-white print on cream paper, made with dense, trembling lines and fine cross-hatching. On the left, occupying more than half the image, stands an old two-story house seen from a corner. Its roof is uneven and appears thatched, with a sagging gable, exposed timbers, crumbling plaster, and irregular stonework. On the upper floor a crooked beam crosses the facade; below it, a window with diamond-shaped panes is partly broken and dark. Another beam juts out over the ground floor, where a weathered wooden door, a small lattice window, and carved posts suggest great age and neglect. To the right the scene opens onto a narrow cobblestone street, uneven and bright where light falls. Against the low building identified as the cloister wall, with a tiled roof and Gothic arched windows, a lone woman seen from behind stands in a long dark skirt, light blouse, and head covering. In the background rises a tall church tower with narrow arched windows, pinnacles, and a very slender, pointed spire that dominates the pale, almost empty sky. The contrast between fragile domestic architecture and monumental religious architecture organizes the whole view.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the ruined house on the left, following its beams and stones from the roof down to the door. Then let your eye travel down the cobbled lane toward the small standing figure, and from there rise to the spire. Notice how that vertical tower changes the scale of the humble, decaying buildings in the foreground.

ContextContexto

This print by Samuel Prout (1783–1852), dated 1821, belongs to A Series of Ancient Buildings and Rural Cottages in the North of England. Its title locates the scene in York, beside a cloister wall. Prout was a British artist known for architectural views and for his interest in old, picturesque buildings. The work is a softground etching, a printmaking technique that produces grainy, soft lines similar to chalk or pencil drawing. The source, the Cleveland Museum of Art, does not identify the church of the spire with certainty, so it is not named here. The print was a gift of Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur D. Prescott in memory of Margery Irish.

Este grabado de Samuel Prout (1783–1852), fechado en 1821, forma parte de A Series of Ancient Buildings and Rural Cottages in the North of England.

Curious detailDato curioso

In softground etching, the plate is covered with a soft, sticky ground and a sheet of paper is drawn on over it; when the paper is lifted, it pulls away parts of the ground following the pressure of the pencil, so the printed line preserves the grainy texture of a hand drawing.

I pause on the cream-colored paper and how the ink settles in dense, vibrant lines. This is a softground etching from 1821, which is why the stroke looks soft and grainy, as if drawn with pencil. I look at the irregular roof, the exposed beams, and the peeling plaster, all built with fine cross-hatching for shadow. I am interested in how Prout balances the fragility of the old two-story house with the solidity of the low cloister wall and the tall tower in the background.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

What draws me most is the sky, pale and almost empty, which lets the slender, pointed spire dominate the whole scene. The tower with its narrow arched windows and pinnacles seems to measure the vertical between the street and the firmament. Below, the cobbled alley is lit in patches, as if light were slipping through clouds. That tension between the fragile domestic and the monumental reminds me how we look for high points to orient ourselves and feel less alone.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This house looks old and crooked, with the roof kind of sagging and the wooden beams all twisted. I want to count the uneven stones and peek into the diamond-pattern window that is broken and dark. On the cobbled street there is a lonely woman seen from behind, with a long skirt and covered head, and in the back a very tall tower with a point touching the sky. I wonder if the lady is going to the church or just taking a walk alone.

  2. #2

On the upper floor of that house, what shape do the panes of the partly broken dark window have?

    HintPista

Look at the small window under the twisted beam, its pattern is not square.

  3. #3

In the background, silhouetted against the pale sky, what very slender and pointed vertical element crowns the church tower?

    HintPista

Find in the background the tall religious building with pinnacles, the thing that most dominates the sky.
