What you would seeLo que verías

A vertical print in black ink on cream paper, drawn with a loose and highly textured line. Occupying almost the entire frame is a ruined stone building in Gothic style, seen close up and slightly from below. On the left rises a large, incomplete pointed arch: its concentric arch stones, attached columns and capitals are drawn block by block, with cracks, gaps and a crumbling upper edge silhouetted against an almost white sky. Through the arch can be seen trees and a sunlit fragment of wall. To the right, the wall continues with smaller arches, a tall pointed window with a central mullion and eroded tracery, and below it the remains of another opening fallen among rubble. Two long trunks or props lean diagonally against the base of the main arch. In the foreground at lower left is a large haystack or bundle of hay, its long wavy strands spilling to the ground and contrasting in softness with the hardness of the stone. There is grass and low planting at the lower right, leafy treetops appearing behind the walls, and shading built from cross-hatched lines, dots and marks that create volume, wear and a diffuse light without dramatic shadows.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the great arch on the left and follow its curve down to the leaning poles at its base. Then compare the hard, block-by-block stonework with the soft, flowing hay in the foreground. Finally, look for the places where trees and light slip through the openings: nature is quietly reclaiming the building.

ContextContexto

According to the source, this is a print by British artist Samuel Prout (1783–1852), dated 1821 and titled *A Series of Ancient Buildings and Rural Cottages in the North of England: At York, Ruins*. It comes from the Cleveland Museum of Art, where it was a gift of Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur D. Prescott in memory of Margery Irish. Prout was known for architectural views and picturesque ruins, subjects much appreciated in early nineteenth-century Britain. The source does not identify which specific York building is shown, so that detail remains unknown; it is probably the remains of a medieval religious building.

Curious detailDato curioso

Softground etching uses a soft, sticky ground on the metal plate: when the artist draws over it, the ground lifts away in a grainy fashion, so the printed line can imitate the texture of chalk or pencil on rough paper.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. What does the contrast between the enduring stone and the fragile hay piled in front of it make you think about?¿Qué te hace pensar el contraste entre la piedra que perdura y el heno frágil amontonado frente a ella?
  2. Why might nineteenth-century viewers have found beauty in a ruined building rather than in an intact one?¿Por qué el público del siglo XIX podía encontrar belleza en un edificio en ruinas y no solo en uno intacto?
  3. If you could hear this place, what sounds would accompany the silence suggested by the image?

What hooks me is how it is etched. It is black ink on cream paper and the line records every voussoir of the pointed arch, every crack and broken edge against the near white sky. It is an 1821 soft ground etching by Samuel Prout, and you feel the love for texture: stone by stone, with crosshatching and speckles to build volume. That haystack with long loose strands below contrasts with the hard stone. Nothing is made up, it is real wear.

I keep looking at the light. There are no dramatic shadows, just a soft overcast glow that leaves the sky almost white and makes the pointed arch stand out. Through the opening you see trees and a sunlit wall, as if the ruin were a telescope pointed at nature. It belongs to the series of ancient buildings in the north of England, at York. It reminds me that ruins measure time, not just space.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a broken castle for giants. The big arch is bitten off at the top and you can see little stones drawn one by one. Behind there are trees and a window with sticks in the middle. Down on the left there is a giant furry thing that looks like lion hair, it is a haystack with strands falling down. There are poles leaning and tiny plants. I like it because the hard stone and the soft hay are friends.

What soft thing with long strands contrasts with the hard stone in the lower left corner?

    HintPista

Look at the bottom left for something that looks like wavy hair falling to the ground.

  2. #2

What shape is the large incomplete arch on the left?

    HintPista

Notice the point formed by the stones at the top of the arch, like an arrow.

  3. #3

What color is the paper where the black ink is printed?

    HintPista

It is not pure white, it is light and warm like a biscuit.
