Gilt silver and ivory
What you would seeLo que verías
The piece is a sculptural coffee pot shown in profile against a neutral gradient background fading from dark gray at the top to light gray at the base, softly lit to emphasize metallic sheen. The body is ovoid and bulbous, wider at the bottom, with a smooth gilt silver surface in pale golden tones and subtle darker patina near the foot. From it emerges a stylized fantastic animal head, likely a goat or ibex, with an elongated tubular snout ending in a small circular ring that serves as the spout. The eye is small and round, set in a textured socket. Above the forehead curves a prominent ivory horn in creamy off-white, incised with fine geometric patterns and parallel lines and a faint crack near the tip. The neck and chest are ornamented with relief work imitating overlapping feathers or scales, with rounded edges and vertical ribbing, and a dorsal frill trailing down the back with linear detailing. The lid is integrated into the head, with an almost invisible hinge line. Tiny details — wrinkles in the metallic skin, the luster of the ivory, the shadow beneath the horn — reveal fine silversmithing. Scale suggests a tabletop object, roughly 20 to 30 cm tall.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start at the ivory horn and follow its curve down to the ring-tipped tubular snout; notice how lid and spout form a single animal. Then examine the feathered chest relief and how sculpture and utilitarian vessel merge.
ContextContexto
According to Cleveland Museum of Art records, the piece belongs to a tea and coffee service with salver and table designed by Carlo Bugatti as an ensemble and presented at the 1902 Exposition of Decorative Arts in Turin, Italy. This coffee pot, dated circa 1907, is in gilt silver and ivory, made in Paris with founder Adrien-Aurélien Hébrard. It was probably acquired from Bugatti’s 1907 exhibition at the Galerie Hébrard in Paris by Anna Blake, a wealthy South African widow living there at the time, who took it to Cape Town. Its style blends Bugatti’s exotic historicism with animal and insect motifs suggesting mythical beasts or prehistoric fossils, characteristic of late Art Nouveau.

Carlo Bugatti, father of the famed automobile designer Ettore Bugatti, was famous for staging his showrooms with silks, parchment and Moorish costumes to create a total exotic environment, and his zoomorphic services like this one broke radically with traditional European silverwork.

What holds my attention is the meeting of materials: the gilt silver with its pale shine and dark patina at the base contrasts with the creamy ivory horn, where a faint fissure shows near the tip. Look at the reliefs on the chest, those overlapping feathers or scales with vertical ridges, and the shadow under the horn. It is fine metalwork, executed in Paris with Hébrard, where every metallic wrinkle speaks of the care to unite the sculptural and the utilitarian.

To me this coffeepot is like a comet that landed on the breakfast table. Its ovoid golden body reflects soft light like a small planet, and the tubular snout ending in a ring looks like a telescope pointing forward. The curved ivory horn over the forehead reminds me of an asteroid trajectory. Presented in Turin in 1902 and dated around 1907, it combines fantasy and science, as if Bugatti wanted to serve coffee from another world.

It looks like a little dragon for serving coffee! It has a shiny golden belly, a long snout with a ring at the tip where the trickle comes out, and a big creamy horn on its head. Its chest is full of tiny feathers or scales that look like a costume. I imagine if you pour hot coffee it will huff like a fantastic animal. It is small, about the size of my arm, but it looks very elegant and a bit mischievous.
