What you would seeLo que verías
At the center, a full-length standing figure fills almost the entire height of the vertical print against a pale, creamy-yellow paper background with slight age spotting. The figure wears a voluminous black outer robe falling to the feet, with a faint all-over pattern of star-like or leaf motifs in muted grey and a warm orange lining visible at the hem, collar and the wide left sleeve. Underneath, a glimpse of an under-kimono and an ornate obi with green and gold diamond patterns and orange tassels can be seen, and the feet wear black zori sandals with white socks. Two swords with light-colored hilts decorated with small lozenges are tucked at the waist, one longer sword carried on the back. The face is powdered white with small red lips and thin brows, turned three-quarters to the left with a calm, composed expression. The hair is styled in a high topknot with a black court cap and a long patterned tail streaming backward. In the right hand, cropped by the edge, the figure holds a large round paper fan with a black handle that floats in the upper right corner. The linework is crisp and black, colors are flat and unshaded, typical of woodblock printing. Black calligraphy and a small red circular seal appear on the right side, with another small seal at the bottom left.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the large round fan in the upper right and follow the diagonal of the headdress to the face. Then notice the contrast between the deep black robe and the warm orange of its lining and tassels. Finally look at the two swords and how the masculine costume interacts with the delicate, made-up features to suggest performance and disguise.
ContextContexto
This is a color woodblock print (mokuhanga) by Yanagawa Shigenobu (1787–1832), dated to the early 1820s during Japan's Edo period (1615–1868). According to the Cleveland Museum of Art record, it belongs to the series The Parade in the Shimmachi District of Osaka and depicts the geisha Motozuru (?) of the Kaideya house performing as a dancer in courtly robes, with the question mark reflecting uncertainty in the historical identification. No further source description is provided. The work belongs to the ukiyo-e tradition, which produced images of actors, courtesans, geisha and festivals for an urban merchant audience.

Curious detailDato curioso
In ukiyo-e, it was common to show geisha and courtesans performing dances in borrowed court or samurai-style costumes during parades in the licensed quarters, turning cross-dressing and role-play into a popular visual theme.

If you look closely at the yellowish cream paper you will see a light mottling, a trace of time that we preserve here. The black mantle covering almost the whole figure interests me greatly: its orange lining peeks at the collar and sleeve, and the subtle gray leaf pattern almost fades away. The firm black outlines and flat, well defined colors are typical of woodblock printing, with flat light and no shadows. I also notice the red seals and the vertical calligraphy on the side, which we care for as an integral part of the print.

I keep looking at the contrast between the light cream background and the black mantle that dominates the print like an eclipse. That orange lining peeking out reminds me of the glow of a horizon at sunset. The round fan at the top right looks like a pale round moon, floating alone. The crossed sabers at the waist mark straight lines, like axes of an orbit. Everything is ordered vertically, with crisp outlines and no shadows, like a celestial diagram printed with precision.

This lady looks dressed up for a parade! Her black mantle is huge and reaches her feet, but inside it is bright orange. She wears two crossed swords that look very serious and black sandals with white socks. Her hairstyle is super tall with a long ribbon flying behind her. She holds a huge round fan that looks like a giant lollipop. Her face is very white with tiny lips and she looks to the side as if she were dancing without moving.
