silk: lampas weave
What you would seeLo que verías
A small, horizontal textile fragment is shown flat, centred against a very pale grey, finely woven mounting surface. The piece is irregular: its top, right side and most of the bottom are fairly straight, but the lower left corner projects downward in a frayed, curving point, exposing the limits of what has survived. Underneath it is a dark reddish-brown support that follows its outline and forms a narrow border, especially visible at the right and along the lower curve. The silk itself is divided between a warm golden-tan ground and a deep muted brownish-mauve pattern. Across the whole field is a dense, small-scale repeat of stylised plants, slender vertical stems, scrolling leaves and animals. Toward the centre and right, rooster-like birds with lifted tails can be made out, alongside quadrupeds that resemble small deer or stags, facing in alternating directions among the foliage. The pattern is so intertwined that figures appear and disappear depending on the light and distance. The surface is abraded, dull rather than shiny, with the grain of the weave visible throughout. There are numerous holes, short cuts, dark losses and frayed edges: a large torn void on the lower left, smaller perforations near the centre and right, and worn patches where the pattern is almost erased. The scale feels intimate, like a piece meant to be read close up.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First look at the whole piece and let the pattern dissolve into texture; then move closer, section by section, until a rooster or a deer emerges. Notice how the losses interrupt the repeat, so the design has to be reconstructed mentally. The dark mount helps: it separates the delicate edges from the grey ground and reveals the fragment's true outline.
ContextContexto
The source identifies this as Fragment with Small-Scale Design, by an unknown maker, made in Italy around 1360–1390 in silk using a lampas weave. It belongs to the Textiles department of the Cleveland Museum of Art, where it was a gift of the Estate of Mary F. Fenton, the Estate of Charles Abel, and S. M. Hexter. Lampas is a compound weave structure that makes it possible to produce clearly patterned figured silks. Italy was an important centre of luxury silk weaving at this date. What complete object this fragment came from is not stated, and its original function is not known; it is probably the surviving part of a larger textile.

Curious detailDato curioso
A surprising visual observation: the largest tear on the left is so dark and animal-like in outline that, at first glance, it can be mistaken for one of the woven motifs.

From my bench I first see what is missing and what still holds. This fourteenth century lampas silk keeps a toasted golden ground with deep muted mauve brown motifs, yet the surface is matte and worn, with holes, short cuts and frayed edges. I notice the dark reddish brown backing that follows the irregular outline and protects the shape, especially the curved point below. It is a luxury that survived only in part, so we care for every thread and every gap.

This textile reminds me of looking at the sky with the naked eye. From afar it looks like a simple field of toasted gold and muted mauve brown, like a woven Milky Way, but up close constellations appear of thin vertical stems, curled leaves, birds with raised tails and small deer like quadrupeds. The dense small scale pattern plays hide and seek, facing alternate directions among foliage. We do not know what larger object it came from, which makes it more mysterious, like a clipped star chart where only a fragment remains to decode.

If you get really close it becomes a game of hide and seek. At first I only see little muted mauve brown dots on gold, but then I find roosters with perky tails and tiny deer walking among little plants with thin stems and curly leaves. Some face one way and others the opposite. I like that the piece is not square, with a curved frayed point at the bottom and little holes as if someone had poked it. You need to look carefully to find all the tiny animals.
