Fragment that shines through lossFragmento que brilla entre pérdidas
Unknown maker / Autor desconocido · 1075–99 · Egypt, Fatimid period
plain weave with inwoven tapestry weave: linen, silk, and gold filé
What you would seeLo que verías
The piece is shown vertically, mounted against a flat, dark greenish-grey support. At its center is an irregular fragment of very dark, almost black, blue-green linen, sheer and gauzy in places, with soft, uneven edges that fray into loose threads at the top and bottom. Across this fragile ground run two horizontal golden-brown bands. The upper group is wider and more legible: dense rows of thread form rectangular strips above and below a central row of interlaced medallions. Inside and around the medallions appear small stylized birds, triangular motifs and tiny turquoise-green accents. The lower group is thinner and more broken, with only part of a round medallion clearly visible at the left. Everywhere the gold has darkened toward ochre, copper and burnt orange, and the woven surface shows small holes, tears, raised threads and missing islands of pattern where the dark support shows through. The contrast is striking: the linen looks weightless and shadowy, while the bands feel compact, granular and slightly raised, as if encrusted. Its aged scale feels intimate rather than monumental, more like a preserved remnant of clothing than a complete textile.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Begin with the two golden bands and notice how light they seem against the nearly black linen. Then move closer to the medallions: the birds emerge only gradually from the interlace. Finally, look at the holes, frayed edges and missing sections, which change the piece from ornament into evidence of survival.
ContextContexto
This fragment is catalogued by the Cleveland Museum of Art as *Tiraz with gold*, made by an unknown maker in Egypt during the Fatimid period, dated 1075–99. It is a plain-weave linen textile with inwoven slit-tapestry bands in silk and gold filé. Its ground is sharb, a fine linen often used for ṭirāz textiles. Ṭirāz were decorated bands, often bearing inscriptions, associated with prestigious garments in the medieval Islamic world. Here the gold thread forms backgrounds for undecipherable texts and interlaced medallions containing roosters, hens and confronted chicks. Its original garment, owner and specific use are not known.

Curious detailDato curioso
Although the golden bands appear to be covered in writing, the museum describes those texts as undecipherable: the letter-like forms function as much as ornament and prestige as as legible language.

What moves me most is fragility versus resilience. The linen ground is so fine it looks like gauze, dark and translucent, with frayed edges and loose threads barely holding together. In contrast the golden bands are compact and grainy, slightly raised, though they also show pits, tears and lifted yarns. I notice how the gold has darkened to ochre and burnt orange, and those lost islands where the grayish green mount shows through. It is a delicate balance between what is lost and what still shines.

I see this fragment as a small constellation. The dark ground is like a night sky of almost black linen with bluish green tints, crossed by two luminous streaks like milky ways. The upper band, wider, has interlaced medallions that remind me of orbits, with tiny birds and little triangles and turquoise green dots like stars. The lower band, thinner and more broken, is like a fading cluster. The golden shine, now ochre and copper, is ancient light still reaching us.

It looks like a very old superhero cape that got torn. The background is a dark see-through little cloth that is a bit spooky because it is all frayed at the top and bottom. But in the middle it has two shiny golden belts. The top one looks clearer and has medallions with tiny chicks and roosters facing each other, and little green dots like jewels. The bottom one is more broken and you only see a little circle on the left. I like that even though it is old it still sparkles.
