What you would seeLo que verías

A near-circular textile fragment with irregular, frayed and slightly torn edges, mounted at the center on a light, plain-weave linen support. The shape is like a disc with a small V-shaped notch at the bottom and a pale horizontal slit near the middle where the backing shows through. The ground weave is a very dark brown, almost black, dense and slightly velvety in texture. Over it a delicate tracery in ochre-gold thread forms interlaced vine scrolls and curling tendrils that divide the field into small compartments. Scattered across the surface are about thirteen small teardrop and round motifs in bright, metallic gold with a granular, slightly reflective surface that catches the light with coppery glints. The matte darkness of the ground makes the gold appear to float. Even, museum lighting reveals the relief of the tapestry, the worn perimeter, loose fibers and subtle variations in the brown ground. The scale feels intimate and handheld, inviting close looking to appreciate the tight weave and the quiet sparkle of gold on dark wool.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the overall contrast of dark ground and scattered gold dots, like a night sky. Then follow the thin ochre vines that loop and enclose each glowing spot. Notice the bottom notch and frayed edges as clues that this was cut from a larger garment.

ContextContexto

This is a round segmentum from a tunic dated to the 300s–400s CE, from Egypt during the Byzantine period, according to Cleveland Museum of Art records. The maker is unknown. The technique is tapestry, probably inwoven in a tabby ground, using wool, linen and gold foil around a silk core. Such roundels were sewn onto the shoulders or lower part of luxury tunics as status ornaments. The piece survives as a fragment, common for archaeological textiles. Its exact findspot and original owner are not recorded.

Curious detailDato curioso

The glitter comes not from solid metal thread but from gold foil wrapped around a silk core, a luxurious technique that kept the textile both luminous and supple.

I pause at the frayed edges and that whitish slit in the center where the linen backing shows through. The ground is a very dark brown, almost black, dense and slightly velvety, with ochre-gold tendrils forming interlaced scrolls. The fragile part is the gold, about thirteen little drop-like dots with metallic shine and a grainy texture that already shows coppery highlights. It was tapestry woven with wool, linen and gold leaf around a silk core, and sewn onto a tunic as ornament. I wonder how to stabilize those loose threads without dulling their flicker.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see this dark disc as a portable night sky, with a V-shaped cut at the bottom like a small eclipse. Against that almost-black brown, ochre-gold threads draw curving tendrils that remind me of orbits and constellations. Then there are those thirteen golden droplets that shine like stars or planets with their own light and coppery glints. It is from the fourth or fifth century, from Byzantine Egypt, and it was sewn onto the shoulders of luxury tunics. I like to imagine someone wearing their own embroidered firmament to walk at night.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a round dark chocolate cookie with a V-shaped bite taken out and a little white line in the middle. On top they drew golden vines that curl into swirls and sprinkled thirteen droplet-shaped sparkles that light up. If I touched it I think it would feel a bit scratchy like velvet. It was a pretty patch to sew onto clothing from a very long time ago, when people in Egypt wore tunics. I imagine whoever wore it walked around and the little sparkles winked like fireflies.

Against the almost-black brown background, how many shiny golden dots or droplet shapes can you count scattered among the tendrils?

Look at the golden embroidery under even light, there are more than ten and fewer than fifteen, with a grainy texture.

Look at the open lower silhouette of the disc, it is like a little notch.
