What you would seeLo que verías
The piece is a nearly circular textile fragment, photographed frontally against a flat ground of off-white woven fabric, whose fine, regular weave contrasts with the object's irregularity. It fills almost the whole frame, and although its outline suggests a disc, it is worn, frayed, and broken in several places. The dominant color is a very dark brown, almost black in the shadowed areas, interrupted by sinuous coppery-brown lines that divide the surface into curved compartments. Around the outer ring, dark oval and circular forms repeat, separated by small golden four-petalled motifs like flowers or clovers. At the center is another, larger golden motif, also floral but incomplete. The gold does not form a smooth surface: it shines unevenly, with yellow and ochre glints, and looks grainy or worn where thread has been lost or bent. Two pale cracks cut into the piece from the left edge and from below toward the center, revealing the backing. There is also a white hole just above the center and several smaller losses. Loose threads escape at the edges; on the left side the dense texture of the weave is clearest. There are no human figures and no scale reference, so its actual size cannot be deduced from the photograph.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First look at the overall circle, then follow the bright fissures that break it and reveal the modern support. Next, trace the outer ring compartment by compartment and compare its small four-petalled flowers with the larger, incomplete flower at the center. The gold glints change the reading of the piece: what initially looks like a dark stain becomes a carefully patterned ornament.
ContextContexto
According to the source, the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is a round segmentum from a tunic, by an unknown maker, dated to the 300s–400s CE in Byzantine-period Egypt. It was made in tapestry, probably inwoven into a tabby ground, using wool, linen, and gold foil wrapped around a silk core. In the late antique world, segmenta were decorative roundels or bands woven into or applied to tunics, often at the shoulders or knees. We do not know who owned this garment, nor, from the data provided, its exact findspot. Judging by its gold and silk thread, it was probably a visible and costly ornament.

Curious detailDato curioso
The gold thread is not solid metal: as the technique line notes, it is gold foil wrapped around a core of silk, a way to gain metallic shine while keeping the yarn light and flexible enough to weave.

What you see is fragile and highly crafted. It is an almost circular fragment with frayed and broken edges, crossed by two pale cracks that reach the center. The background is very dark brown, almost black, divided by coppery lines into curved compartments. I focus on the uneven shine of the gold: it is not smooth, it looks grainy, with lost and bent threads. Against the bone-colored cloth you can see the small four-petaled golden motifs and the incomplete central medallion. Wool, linen and gold leaf over silk: luxury that now needs extreme care.

To me it looks like a small portable universe. The dark disc, almost black, is crossed by coppery lines like orbits separating constellations. On the outer ring there are dark oval shapes among tiny four-petaled golden flowers, like stars. At the center there is another golden sun, incomplete, cut by pale cracks that look like fissures of light. Photographed frontally on a bone background, with no human scale, the piece makes you imagine it shining on a tunic, moving like an embroidered night sky between the years 300 and 400.

It looks like a giant little burnt cookie that got broken. It is round but not perfect, with fuzzy edges and two pale little lines crossing it like roads. It is very dark brown, almost black, with copper-colored lines making funny shapes. Around it there are dark little ovals and tiny golden four-petaled flowers, and in the middle a bigger golden flower but cut off. It sparkles just a little, not evenly. It sits on a bone-colored cloth and has tiny holes where you can see the background. I love hunting for the little flowers!
Brilla poquito a poquito, no parejo.
