If you look closely you will see how the artist worked with etching and engraving on paper. The dark background is made of tiny dots placed very close together and the floor with fine parallel lines. I love how cross-hatching creates shadows on the cloak, the armchair with its studs and the smoke rising in a spiral. The light border of the print contrasts with the deep black and lets us read every fold and texture even though there is only black ink on light paper.

I wonder why the boy looks so serious and so small next to the chair. The room looks dark behind them and the floor has little lines.
