What you would seeLo que verías

Horizontal black-and-white etching with fine, dense linework characteristic of the medium, enclosed by a thin border and a pale paper margin. In the foreground, on rocky ground dotted with tufts of grass, a small procession of animals moves to the right. At the center, a donkey in profile with drooping ears and an elongated muzzle carries on its back an upright fox with a pointed snout, pricked ears, and a bushy tail draped over a cloth covering the donkey. In front of the donkey walks a bulky bear with coarse, shaggy fur and lowered head, beside which the head of a ram with curved horns peeks out. To the right, a lean wolf or dog with visible ribs raises its head toward the donkey as if in conversation. In the background on the left, rocks and tree trunks with dense, cross-hatched foliage; on the right, an open landscape with light-branched trees, a slope, and atop a hill the small silhouette of a ruined tower. Light is even and diffuse without harsh shadows, while fur, stone, and foliage are distinguished by varying densities of hatching and cross-hatching, creating a rich tactile quality in miniature scale.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the upright fox riding the donkey, its dominant posture anchors the composition. Follow the exchange of glances between the wolf and the donkey, then linger on the contrasting fur textures of the bear and the fox that show the etcher's handling of line.

ContextContexto

Etching by Dutch artist Allart van Everdingen (1621–1675), dated 1650–75, part of his series on Reynard the Fox, the central character of medieval European satirical literature. The technique is etching on paper, categorized as a print. The work belongs to the Cleveland Museum of Art, a gift in memory of Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Vixseboxse. The source provides no narrative description, but the scene likely depicts an episode where anthropomorphized animals travel together. No further details about this specific impression are recorded beyond the technical data and provenance supplied by the museum.

I pause to look at how the etching shows every little hair and stone with tiny close hatching. The pale paper with its clear margin and the thin line framing the image tells me this print was made to be seen up close. I like comparing the smooth blanket on the donkey with the shaggy coat of the bear and the bushy tail of the fox, all achieved with just black ink and crosshatching without color. The density of the lines creates different textures for rock, grass and foliage.

Although this print is in black and white and shows daylight, it makes me think about how we observe. The fox rides on top of the donkey as if it had a better lookout, and in the background there is a ruined tower on a hill that recalls an abandoned observatory. The open landscape on the right, with light trees and a slope, contrasts with the dark rocks and trunks on the left. It is a play of soft light and hatching that reminds me of watching the sky slowly, searching for silhouettes.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a line of animal friends going for a walk. The fox sits very straight on top of the little donkey as if it were the boss, with its fluffy tail hanging down. In front walks a very hairy bear with its head low and next to it a ram with little curved horns peeks out. A skinny wolf looks at them with its head raised. I like to imagine where they are going and what they are chatting about as they walk over little stones and past trees toward the tower far away on the hill.
