A black-and-white horizontal etching with dense cross-hatching and deep, sketchy shadows. At the upper center, reclining on a grassy mound, a lion with a thick, curly mane gazes forward with a solemn expression; to his left sit a bear and a lioness, both watching attentively. To the lion's right cluster a tall, narrow-snouted wolf standing upright, a sheep tucked behind him, and a small badger-like animal in the foreground near the wolf's legs. In the lower register the tone shifts dramatically: a rooster with ruffled feathers and an open beak appears to plead or accuse, standing beside a makeshift stretcher of two poles where a dead hen lies on her back, wings splayed and neck limp. Another hen bends over the body, while three small chicks or hens stand nearby, heads tilted in attention. The background is wooded, with vertically hatched tree trunks and loosely sketched foliage at the upper left. Light falls from the center, leaving the predators in half-shadow and highlighting the rooster's plumage and the lifeless body. The scale is intimate, like a book illustration, with the rough texture of aged paper and a thin ruled border framing the scene as a moral theater.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the rooster at the lower left and follow his accusing gaze up to the enthroned lion. Then drop your eyes to the stretcher with the dead hen, the emotional core of the image. Notice how the predators above watch impassively: that contrast between private grief and indifferent power reshapes the meaning.

ContextContexto

This is an etching by Dutch artist Allart van Everdingen (1621–1675), dated 1650–75, according to the Cleveland Museum of Art, where the print is held. It belongs to his series on Reynard the Fox, a medieval satirical beast epic widely popular in Europe in which anthropomorphized animals critique human society. This episode, The Complaint of the Cock, shows the rooster bringing a charge against the fox before the lion's court for the killing of a hen. The work is classified as a print from the Netherlands, made with etching, typical of Dutch Baroque graphic production. No further details about this impression are given in the source data.

Curious detailDato curioso

Allart van Everdingen is best known for his Nordic landscapes, yet his Reynard the Fox series of over fifty etchings became one of the most influential visual versions of the tale in the seventeenth-century Netherlands.

What draws me in is the etching technique: that dense cross-hatching that builds deep shadows and gives volume to the lion's mane and the rooster's feathers. Notice how the acid bit the plate to create those vertical strokes on the trunks and the rough texture of the aged paper. The contrast is deliberate, the light leaves the predators in half-shadow and highlights the dead hen's body on the little stretcher of sticks, like a moral stage set for the book.

I see this print like an inverted night sky. Light comes from the center and leaves the big figures, the lion, the bear and the wolf, in half-light, while it brightens the small ones below, the complaining rooster and the chicks. It is a play of light and dark like looking at constellations: the predators above form a fixed, solemn court, and below there is an intimate, bright drama. The sketched forest works like a horizon that encloses the scene and focuses all attention on that contrast.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

The rooster is very angry and sad because his hen is lying on a little stretcher made of sticks and she is not moving, with her little wings open. He is shouting with his beak wide open in front of the lion who is the king lying on the grass looking serious. Behind there is a wolf with a long snout, a little sheep and a little bear watching. Below there are three tiny chicks looking at their mom and another hen taking care of her. Everything is in black and white and it looks like a story about talking animals.
