What you would seeLo que verías

Against a plain, light beige mounting fabric, an irregular textile fragment appears, taller than it is wide and broken into torn, frayed islands. Its ground is a worn tan, somewhere between sand and old linen, with a visible woven grain, loose threads at the edges, brownish stains, and numerous holes that let the background show through. Over this pale surface runs a faded red pattern, at times rosy, at times rusty, forming parts of large roundels linked by diagonal bands. Inside and along those circles appear small dots, heart-like or leaf-like spots, curved lines, and sections of lattice. Near the center, slightly to the left, a small detached scrap repeats a red spot inside a diagonal frame. The most legible motif is at lower right: a bird in profile, in reddish silhouette, with a long curved neck, small head facing left, rounded body, and two very thin, straight legs. Other areas suggest further roundels and animals now lost. The light is even and soft, without strong shadows, emphasizing the roughness of the fibers, the fragility of the edges, and the contrast between the surviving cloth and the empty gaps.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Begin with the holes and frayed edges, to understand that this is a survival, not a complete cloth. Then move to the bird at lower right, the clearest figure. Finally, follow the red circles and dots to reconstruct how the pattern once repeated.

ContextContexto

According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is a textile fragment from the 700s, by an unknown maker, attributed broadly to Iran, Iraq, or Syria. It is described as samite in wool and cotton and was acquired through the J. H. Wade Fund. The exact place of production, its original garment or furnishing, and its maker are unknown. Roundels containing animals were common motifs in early medieval textiles of the region, probably circulating through trade and shared workshop traditions, although this fragment alone cannot confirm a specific route or use.

Curious detailDato curioso

Surprising visual observation: despite so much loss, the bird at lower right preserves its curved neck, body, and two thin legs, becoming the fragment's only almost-complete figure.

  1. What might the complete cloth have looked like when the roundels and birds repeated without interruption?¿Cómo pudo verse la tela completa cuando los medallones y las aves se repetían sin interrupción?
  2. How does the damage change our reading: do we see an ancient pattern, or a story of survival?¿Cómo cambia la lectura el deterioro: vemos un diseño antiguo o una historia de supervivencia?
  3. Why might a bird within a circle have been a fitting motif to weave, wear, or preserve?¿Por qué un ave dentro de un círculo pudo ser un motivo atractivo para tejer, vestir o conservar?

I see a very fragile samite fragment made of wool and cotton, from the 8th century and broadly attributed to Iran, Iraq or Syria. I focus on the toasted beige ground and the faded red that sometimes looks pinkish. Loose threads, gaps and brownish stains tell me about wear and loss. I notice the circular roundels linked by diagonal bands, the latticework and, at the lower right, the bird in profile with a long curved neck and thin straight legs. I do not reconstruct the original garment, I simply care for what survives.

When I look at this textile I think of constellations. The red roundels on the sandy ground remind me of crossing orbits, like planets linked by diagonal bands. The bird in profile at the lower right could be an unfinished sky figure, and the gaps showing the pale backing are like empty patches of sky. I know it is an 8th century wool and cotton fragment with no precise origin, and that roundel motifs were common, but I like to imagine how the pattern repeated across the whole cloth, like stars in a series.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This little cloth is all broken and looks like a puzzle with holes. It is sandy colored with faded red drawings. I see big circles connected together and tiny dots and little leaves. What I like most is the little red bird at the bottom right, with its long curved neck and skinny legs looking to the left. There is another loose bit near the center with a red spot. I wonder how many more little birds there were when the cloth was whole and not all frayed.
