What you would seeLo que verías
An almost square textile fragment, heavily worn, shown frontally against a pale background. The weaving uses a limited palette of dark brown, almost black, on a yellowish beige ground, with loose and missing threads creating irregular off-white gaps. A thick dark border frames the piece. Along the top, five stylized standing human figures with rounded heads and flat silhouetted bodies appear to interact in pairs. In the center, a circular medallion enclosed by a dark band holds three figures: two standing above and one reclining or fallen below, with geometric shapes suggesting weapons or shields. In the lower zone, four smaller figures flank the medallion, two on each side, also in combat poses. The weave is coarse and clearly visible, with a wool-on-linen texture, frayed at the edges and inside. The flat museum lighting emphasizes the contrast between preserved textile and voids, revealing knots, irregular stitching, and tonal shifts due to aging. The scale seems domestic, the size of a garment appliqué. At first glance the composition looks abstract and fragmentary, becoming legible only when the human outlines and their fighting gestures are traced slowly.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start at the outer border to follow the band of figures around the square, then move down to the central medallion. Notice how tears and gaps break the silhouettes and invite you to mentally complete the bodies and their fighting gestures.
ContextContexto
According to Cleveland Museum of Art records, this is a square segmentum — a decorative textile appliqué sewn onto tunics — dated to the 500s to early 600s, from Egypt during the Byzantine period. It is made in tapestry originally inwoven in a tabby ground, using linen and wool. The maker is unknown, as is typical for Coptic textiles of this era. Such pieces often display figurative scenes — mythological, hunting or combat — for ornamental and symbolic purposes. No specific archaeological findspot or original owner is recorded. The cultural and chronological attribution rests on technical and stylistic comparison.

Curious detailDato curioso
Though today it looks abstract due to wear, this type of segmentum was woven directly on the loom as part of a tunic fabric and then cut out for application; the back sometimes still shows the pale linen ground where the colored wool was inserted.

The conservatorLa restauradora
What moves me most is what is missing. I see an almost lost square, with loose threads and ivory-colored gaps where the linen gave way. The dark border still holds the piece together, but the brown wool weft is frayed. This segmentum was sewn onto a tunic and the wear tells of use, of a body, and of centuries. I do not restore by imagining what is lost, I just stabilize what remains so those fighting silhouettes stay readable without inventing anything.
The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado
At first glance it looks like a fragmented night sky. The yellowish beige ground is like a pale Milky Way, and the almost black dark brown draws human constellations. On top I count five figures aligned like stars, in the center a circular medallion looks like an eclipse with three figures inside, and below four more flank it. It is a woven map from the sixth century, not of the cosmos, but it also asks for patience to connect dots and see stories where before there were only smudges.
The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
It looks like an old chewed-up puzzle. It is square but with little holes everywhere and fuzzy threads sticking out. At first I only see brown spots, but if I get closer little people with round heads show up fighting. On top there are five standing, in the middle there is a circle with two on top and one lying down, and at the bottom there are four more. I like that I have to search for them like playing hide and seek among the threads, even though the drawing is all broken.
