What you would seeLo que verías

Two near-circular woven fragments lie side by side against a flat, plain background. Warp threads fringe out at the edges, and a few loose strands stand up at the top of the right-hand piece. Inside each dark roundel, a hunter-striding figure in a short, belted tunic and light headgear strides across the field, a spear angled in one hand and the other arm raised. A large leaping beast - held by a thin line from the hunter - occupies the top of the roundel, and a smaller hound near the hunter's feet in each circle twists round to look back. The two roundels are close copies of each other. The weave shows as a fine ribbed texture throughout, and the surviving linen ground is a warm sandy beige. The colours are severely restricted, mostly deep brownish-purple against undyed linen, with narrow details picked out in a lighter tan. The overall impression is of something flat and ceremonially still, once meant to move with a wearer's body.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First, stand back and notice how the two roundels answer each other like a pair of mirrors. Then walk closer. Follow the hunter's spear from hand to hand across the gap between them, check where the fringe has come loose, and try to find small breaks in the dark ground where the weave has worn away.

ContextContexto

These paired roundels were made somewhere between the 700s and 900s, and historians tie them to the weaving traditions that kept late antique habits alive in early medieval Egypt. _Segmenta_ like these were normally worked into a larger garment or furnishing, but whether these two came off the shoulders of a tunic or from somewhere else entirely is hard to say now. The hunting imagery prints to older Roman and Byzantine taste that local workshops kept alive and reworked. Coconut-shell buttons of matching fibre, and the wool-and-linen tapestry weave, print to clothing built for dry heat. Pairs of this kind have turned up across Egypt, and sets are now scattered through museum textile stores worldwide. You can picture them laid against plain linen, catching light as the wearer moved.

Curious detailDato curioso

These two near-mirror roundels are woven so carefully that the animals stay firmly inside their circles, never over the border. The fig trees and spear create a sense of protection, which likely explains why such roundels turned up in burials as well as on everyday clothes.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. Why would a garment want to advertise hunting, with its mix of danger and status?¿Por qué una prenda querría anunciar la caza, con su mezcla de peligro y estatus?
  2. Do these figures look Egyptian, Roman, Byzantine - or does that question no longer fit?¿Estas figuras se ven egipcias, romanas, bizantinas, o esa pregunta ya no encaja?
  3. What else might the roundels have decorated, if not a tunic?¿Qué más pudieron decorar estos círculos, si no una túnica?

I focus on how fragile this textile is: two dark roundels on a sandy beige linen that still keeps its fine, ridged texture. I see the warp threads fraying at the edges and those loose ends at the top of the right medallion, signs of age and wear. The palette is minimal, a deep brownish purple against undyed linen with lighter toasted touches. I wonder how to support that flat surface without stress, a surface that once moved with a body wearing it.

These two nearly identical circles make me think of twin orbits. Inside each dark disc, the hunter in a short tunic strides forward with his angled spear, like a moving constellation. Above, a large beast leaps, held by a thin line, and below a small hound twists to look back. They are close copies, like two moons telling the same story. I am drawn to that ceremonial stillness, a whole hunting universe contained within a smooth, light background.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

They look like two round patches from an old video game. In each one there is a man with a light little hat and short tunic running with a spear, and his tiny dog turning its head as if looking at me. At the top a big animal is jumping, held by a little string! The two pictures are almost the same, as if someone copied them by hand. I like that everything is dark purplish on sandy colored cloth, and the edges have fuzzy little hairs like messy fringe.

If you count the medallions lying side by side on the plain background, how many dark circles do you see in total?

    HintPista

It is not one alone nor three, it is a pair that copies each other.

No es uno solo ni son tres, son un par que se copia el uno al otro.

  2. #2

Look inside each circle: what small faithful animal goes by the hunter's feet and turns its head to look back?

    HintPista

It has four legs, it barks and accompanies the hunter in the scene.

    HintPista

It is not bright red nor total black, it is a dark earthy purple.
