What you would seeLo que verías

A long, narrow, vertical textile strip is shown centered against a plain medium-gray background, isolated like a museum object. The fragment is elongated and pendant-like, with uneven, frayed edges, especially along the left side near the middle where loose threads and small losses are visible. Its composition is linear and compartmentalized: a central column divided into oval and rectangular panels enclosed by a dark outer border dotted with tiny light geometric motifs. At the top, a nude standing figure appears to hold something above the head; below it, a haloed bust in a frame; then a draped figure in profile; followed by two medallions with stylized foliage in muted greens and ochres; and near the base, a seated figure with bent knees. The palette is earthy and subdued: deep garnet red, yellowish ochre, dark navy, faded green, and raw linen beige. The lighting is even and curatorial, with no cast shadows, revealing the dense, slightly grainy tapestry weave of wool on linen, the wear, pilling, and frayed weft. The lower end widens into a small spoon-shaped oval medallion with a vegetal motif, closing the strip like a terminal ornament. The overall scale feels delicate and intimate, made to be seen up close on clothing.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Follow the strip from top to bottom as if reading a column. Pause on the faces and how they shift from nude to draped and haloed. Notice the small terminal medallion at the bottom that shows this was once an ornamental band on a garment.

ContextContexto

According to source data, this is a fragment of a clavus, a decorative band sewn vertically onto tunics in Late Antiquity and the early Middle Ages. Dated to the 700s–800s, it is probably attributed to Egypt during the Abbasid period, 8th–9th century, woven in tapestry technique using linen and wool. It is part of the Cleveland Museum of Art collection, supported by the Andrew R. and Martha Holden Jennings Fund. Its style, with schematized human figures, vegetal medallions, and geometric borders, shows the continuity of Coptic textile traditions into the early Islamic era. The exact findspot and original garment are not known.

Curious detailDato curioso

Clavi were paired bands running from the shoulders down Roman and Byzantine tunics, often signaling status, and many surviving examples come from burials in arid Egypt where the dry climate preserved textiles for over a millennium.

The conservatorLa restauradora

As a conservator I focus on how fragile this strip is: the frayed edges, loose threads and small losses that reveal centuries of use and wear. I notice the tapestry technique in wool on linen and the dark dotted border framing each compartment. The earthy colors — deep red, ochre, dark blue and faded green — are muted but still legible. I am fascinated by how the even museum lighting reveals the dense grainy texture without hiding its vulnerability.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

This clavus feels like a vertical map to be read from top to bottom like a narrative constellation. I see the narrow band divided into compartments with a geometric border, where human figures and plant medallions alternate. At the top a standing figure, then a haloed bust, and further down stylized foliage in green and ochre. The linear symmetrical composition leads the eye like a column of stars. The small oval medallion at the end seems to close the journey, like a final dot.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a very old narrow scarf that someone wore a lot. Its edges are all scruffy and it is floating on a gray background. If you follow it with your finger, you find little people hidden inside boxes: one standing at the top, another with a shiny circle around the head, another sitting with bent knees, and in the middle two medallions with tiny green leaves. I like that it ends at the bottom with an oval pendant, like a prize.
