What you would seeLo que verías

The work is an irregular textile fragment, mounted vertically on a plain support fabric in greyish brown, with a visible weave and a rough appearance. The original fragment, made of silk, occupies the center and preserves no complete edge: its outlines are torn, frayed, and pierced by numerous losses that reveal the background. Faded blue-greens, sage green, olive, beige, and a nearly black blue predominate, with small cream accents along the outlines. The surface combines smooth, matte areas with passages of slight sheen, characteristic of worn and uneven threads. The design is organized into horizontal and vertical bands with tiny geometric motifs, strips bearing inscriptions or barely legible pseudo-inscriptions, and medallions. A diagonal chain of olive circles edged in a pale tone stands out, surrounding a dark shape that resembles a bird in profile facing left. Below, inside a framed panel, a symmetrical plant motif can be made out, like a pale flower or palmette against a dark ground. There are separate islets at the upper right and below, loose threads, areas of wear, and a contrast in scale between the fine grain of the support and the more complex, fragmented, and rough texture of the old silk.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the neutral support fabric, then notice how many edges of the silk are torn rather than cut. Follow the diagonal chain of circles until you reach the dark bird-like shape, and then look down to the pale floral motif. That contrast between geometric order and physical loss changes the reading: this is not only a pattern, but the remnant of a larger object.

ContextContexto

According to its source, the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is a silk fragment by an unknown maker, dated to the 1300s and attributed to Egypt or Syria during the Mamluk period. It was made as double cloth in tabby weave. The Mamluk period, roughly 1250 to 1517, encompassed Egypt and Syria and is known for refined textile production, often featuring decorative bands, geometry, and calligraphy. It is not known what garment or object this fragment belonged to, what its original size was, or who used it; it probably formed part of a larger piece that is now lost.

Curious detailDato curioso

Double cloth is woven with two layers of fabric formed on the loom at the same time, allowing contrasting patterns and colors to appear between the faces of a single textile.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. What might the complete textile have looked like, and what was it used for before it became a fragment?¿Cómo pudo verse el textil completo y para qué se usó antes de convertirse en fragmento?
  2. How does mounting a fragile remnant on a modern support change the way we perceive it?¿Cómo cambia nuestra percepción montar un resto frágil sobre un soporte moderno?
  3. What can the animal, plant, and geometric motifs tell us without knowing exactly what they meant?¿Qué pueden decirnos los motivos de animales, plantas y geometrías sin saber exactamente qué significaban?

The conservatorLa restauradora

I pause on what time has done and what we try to hold together. This fourteenth century silk fragment from Egypt or Syria in the Mamluk period arrives with torn and frayed edges, with losses that reveal the grayish taupe backing. Its double cloth in plain weave is worn, with matte areas and others with a faint sheen. I am moved by those faded bluish greens and olive tones, so fragile, carefully mounted so the weave does not keep opening further.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see this textile like an ancient sky full of constellations. The horizontal and vertical bands are like meridians, and that diagonal chain of olive circles edged in light reminds me of intertwined orbits around a dark center. The bird in profile looking to the left looks like a lost constellation. The medallions and tiny geometric motifs are faint stars on deep almost black blues and beige. A celestial map worn by centuries.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like an old puzzle that broke a lot. In the middle there is a cloth with lots of little holes and the edge all frayed. I like to hunt for treasures: I see a little chain of olive green circles hugging a dark little bird looking to the left. Down below there is a light little flower like a tiny palm inside a dark little square. The colors are like a tired jungle, sage green and bluish green, with cream touches. I want to count the little circles.
